IHOP_2002 project description
International H2O Project 2002
Summary
IHOP_2002 took place over the Southern Great Plains of the United States from 13 May to 25 June 2002. The main goal of IHOP_2002 is to obtain more accurate and reliable measurements of moisture in the air. IHOP_2002 measurements will ultimately help us in understanding when, where, and how storms form and will allow us to better predict actual rainfall amounts associated with these storms. Objectives:
IHOP_2002 is comprised of four main research components: 1) Quantitative Precipitation Forecasting - use a variety or forecasting models to determine if better humidity measurements will improve the models' ability to forecast rainfall. 2) Convective Initiation - scientists and modelers will assess if humidity measurements mad before storms form can help in forecasting the timing and location of new storms. 3) Atmospheric Boundary Layer - study the relationship between land surface variations and air moisture variations. And 4) Instrumentation - this effort will determine the best combination of humidity measuring instruments to better predict rainfall amounts.
