Description:
Abstract:
Cloud free Quickbird satellite imagery acquired on July 30 2008 was used to develop the land cover maps in this study. The 2008 image was acquired from DigitalGlobe. The datasets were composed of four multispectral (2.4m) and one panchromatic (0.6m) band. The multispectral bands were fused with the panchromatic scene using a Principal Components sharpening method, which characteristically maintains spatial and spectral quality (Vijayaraj et al., 2006). Ten land cover types were chosen for the land cover classification. These included seven vegetated land cover types identified from cluster analysis of plot level species cover data from ITEX and resampled IBP plots, bare ground, ice/snow/urban areas, and water. For each class, a minimum of 10 sites surveyed on the ground and classified according to the land cover decision rules derived from the cluster analyses of plot level species data and used to train a supervised classification in ENVI (version 4.4). These same training sites, all located outside of the biocomplexity manipulation area were also used for the creation of the 2002 Barrow Biocomplexity Land Cover Map. The classification used a minimum distance algorithm and the 4-band pan-sharpened Quickbird multispectral image stack with a normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) layer added to this. After completing the classification, a majority filter with a kernel size of 3x3 was applied to the map to improve spatial coherency among classes. Classes are encoded as follows: 1 - Water; 2 - Aquatic graminoid tundra; 3 - Seasonally flooded graminoid tundra; 4 - Wet graminoid tundra; 5 - Moist graminoid tundra; 6 - Dry-moist dwarf shrub-graminoid tundra; 7 - Dry dwarf shrub-graminoid tundra; 0 - Bare ground.
