Abstract:
This is a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the Barrow Biocomplexity study area.Light detection and Ranging (LIDAR) data were acquired by AeroMetric (<http://www.aerometric.com/>) on October 4th 2005 at an altitude of approximately 600 meters above mean terrain using an Optech 70 kHz Airborne Laser Terrain Mapper (ALTM 30/70) on board a twin engine Cesna 310 aircraft. The system was configured with a differential global positioning system (DGPS) and a 200 Hz intertial measurements system (IMU) that were used to improve the accuracy of ground data. LIDAR data were processed by PND Engineers Inc. (<http://www.pndengineers.com/index.aspx>). Data were post-processed utilizing Optech's REALM software, which first computes a 2 Hz Post Processed Kinematic (PPK) DGPS trajectory, then integrates the IMU data for a final smoothed best estimate of trajectory (SBET). SBET data were then integrated with the LIDAR pulse data, for a final x, y, z "point cloud" dataset in the industry standard '.LAS' format in the WGS 84, Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM), Zone 4, Meters coordinate system with ellipsoidal heights. These data required a vertical datum adjustment to transform the vertical datum from ellipsoidal heights to the Alaska Geoid 99 orthometric height using an 'in-house' software package 'LIDAR Tools' at PND Engineers Inc. Following post-processing in TerraSolid's 'TMatch' software that corrected data for Heading, Roll, Pitch and Mirror scale data were then "classified" using TerraSolid's 'TerraScan' software. Classification of the 'bare earth was performed by running algorithms in Terrascan that re-classify the 'last return' data to a 'bare earth' classification, which were output to a comma delimited "Point Cloud" ASCII format. Calibration reports for this system typically report a horizontal and vertical accuracy of 0.30 and 0.15 meters respectively and a point spacing of approximately 0.60 meters. Data were quality checked in late August 2006 by Siebert and Associates (<http://seibert-ak.com/gps>). This survey (n = 286 points) indicated a systematic error of -0.143 meters, which was used to correct the LIDAR point cloud data in TerraScan. Resulting data show a mean difference between LIDAR and ground based data of 0.003 meters (median = 0.004, RMSE = 0.043 meters). The Digital Elevation Model was derived by importing the final LIDAR x, y, z point cloud into ArcGIS (version 9.2) and creating a full resolution TIN and exporting this to a 1 meter raster layer using a linear interpolation method.
