The data and documentation found in this directory are from the Department of Energy's Response, Resistance, Resilience to, and Recovery from Disturbance in arctic ecosystems (R4D) Program Data Report, "Toolik Lake Permanent Vegetation Plots: Site Factors, Soil Physical and Chemical Properties, Plant Species Cover, Photographs, and Soil Descriptions" (D.A. Walker and N.C.Barry, 1991, Joint Facility for Regional Ecosystem Analysis, Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO 80309). The files located in this dataset are provided in several different formats. All text files are in both ASCII (*.TXT) and Microsoft Word (*.DOC) format. All data files are in both tab-delimited ASCII (*.TXT) and Microsoft Excel (*.XLS) format. There is a PostScript file (TKPLOT.PS) that shows the area of study on the North Slope of Alaska. It is suggested that *.DOC and *.XLS table and data files be used if possible, because the table strucuture is complex, large and formatted specifically for data extraction (the tables are more than 80 characters in length and are suitable for input into most spreadsheets). If this is not possible, the data report, associated tables, and data files can be accessed from the ASCII format files, but they will be more difficult to use since the table structure is so large. Please refer to the table for the row and column dimensions of the data files. TOOLIK.TXT is the data report for this project and should answer any questions you might have on any of the data sets included. If there are further questions, contact D. A.
