Title: B59: 2008-2010 BASIS survey acoustics
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: spreadsheet
Description:
Abstract:
The 2008-2010 BASIS surveys were conducted on the Bering Sea shelf (~30 m to 500 m depth ranges) in August-October aboard the RV Oscar Dyson and FV Epic Explorer. Survey extent varied among the years. Acoustic data (Oscar Dyson - 18, 38, 70, 120, and 200 kHz; Epic Explorer - 38 kHz) were collected along transects between surface trawl stations. One or two midwater trawls were performed each day to identify targets observed on the acoustics. These datasets were analyzed using the 38 kHz acoustic data and midwater+surface trawl data for species or group assignment. Data are presented as integrated water column backscatter (i.e., acoustic energy summed within depth categories) within 0.5 nmi horizontal bins for species or scattering groups. Species or group assignment was made using surface and/or midwater trawl catch composition. Data are from both day and night periods. These data are considered to represent conservative backscatter estimates of age-0 pollock (Pollock0), age-1 pollock (Pollock1), capelin age-0+ (Capelin), Pacific herring (Herring), age-0 Pacific cod (PacificCod0), age-1+ Arctic cod (ArcticCod1+), age-1+ saffron cod (SaffronCod1+), rockfish/Atka mackeral/Pacific sandfish/sand lance/stickleback/rainbow smelt/prowfish (Other), and unidentified, non-partitioned species (UnkFish).
Purpose:
These data provide acoustic backscatter estimates for age-0 pollock (Pollock0), age-1 pollock (Pollock1), capelin age-0+ (Capelin), Pacific herring (Herring), age-0 Pacific cod (PacificCod0), age-1+ Arctic cod (ArcticCod1+), age-1+ saffron cod (SaffronCod1+), rockfish/Atka mackeral/Pacific sandfish/sand lance/stickleback/rainbow smelt/prowfish (Other), and unidentified, non-partitioned species (UnkFish). from the 2008-2010 BASIS surveys. These data are intended to provide an index of relative biomass distribution for BSIERP/BEST models. Users who wish to use the data for other purposes should contact the authors.

These data are considered to represent conservative backscatter estimates for age-0 pollock (Pollock0), age-1 pollock (Pollock1), capelin age-0+ (Capelin), Pacific herring (Herring), age-0 Pacific cod (PacificCod0), age-1+ Arctic cod (ArcticCod1+), age-1+ saffron cod (SaffronCod1+), rockfish/Atka mackeral/Pacific sandfish/sand lance/stickleback/rainbow smelt/prowfish (Other), and unidentified, non-partitioned species (UnkFish). No formal estimates of accuracy were performed given limited sampling but standard procedures were used throughout the analysis and all acoustic data were cross-checked by two analysts.
Logical_Consistency_Report: not applicable
Completeness_Report:
The following definitions or acronyms are used in these data: Pollock0 = age-0 walleye pollock Pollock1 = age-1 walleye pollock Capelin = age-0+ capelin Hering01 = Pacific herring (age-1 and age-1 combined) PacificCod0 = age-0 Pacific Cod SaffronCod= age-1+ saffron cod ArcticCod = age-1+ Arctic cod OtherSps = rockfish, Atka mackeral, Pacific sandfish, Bering wolffish, sand lance, stickleback, rainbow smelt, prowfish UnkFish = mixed fish (could include any of the above categories), but insufficient trawl data to partition backscatter to species
In the spreadsheet names: AcoustDiel -> Day = daytime data AcoustDiel -> Night = nighttime data Due to diel vertical migration of some species, or in some regions of the study area, there may be differences in the Day and Night data. For absolute consistency, only Day data should be used but this will result in the exclusion of some key transect regions. Users should be aware that potential "hot spots" in the data may be from Night and not the aggregation of organisms.
Category = analytic region: Stratified = estimate is 15 m below the surface to 0.5 m from the bottom in the Middle and Outer Domains. Estimates are provided for Shallow (pycnocline and above) and Deep (below pycnocline) regions Mixed = estimate is 15 m below the surface to 0.5 m from the bottom in appoximately the Inner Domain. Estimates are water column.
Backscatter (NASC, sA, m^2/nmi^2) is broken into: _wc = water column, from the 15 m below the surface to 0.5 m from the bottom. This estimate is provided for the Mixed region (it's a water column estimate as described above) and for the Stratified region (by summing the Shallow and Deep estimates) _shallow = 15 m below the surface to the base of the fish/jelly-associated pycnocline layer (Middle domain) or to 35 m (Outer domain) _deep = the base of the pycnocline (Middle Domain) or 35 m (Outer Domain) to 0.5 m from the bottom. Only in the Stratified region.
Column headers and additional notes are given in the "File Info" page of the Excel file.

Methodology_Description:
Acoustic data contained in this dataset were collected with the 38 kHz Simrad EK60 unit on the RV Oscar Dyson or the 38 kHz ES60 unit on the FV Epic Explorer.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Noise (TVG-rampled) was removed from the data using traditional (linear subtraction) methods. A 10 dB signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio was imposed.
A 0.5 m backstep was used to exclude data from withon 0.5 m of the bottom. To account for transducer location (9.15 m from the surface on the RV Oscar Dyson) and saturation, data were excluded from the surface to 15 m depth.
Process_Date: Unknown
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The bottom of the fish/jellyfish-associated pycnocline layer was defined in the Middle Domain using a edge-detection routine and smoothed by an operator. In the Outer Domain, where the layer was weak or absent, the layer was defined at 35 m (the average maximum depth of the trawl, also approximately the maximum depth of the pycnocline in the Middle Domain). In the Inner domain, no layer was present/dectected. "mixed" = ~Inner Domain, no layer detection, water column estimates "shallow" = Middle and Outer Domains, region above the base of the fish/jellyfish-associated pycnocline "deep" = Middle and Outer Domains, region below the base of the fish/jellyfish-associated pycnocline
Process_Date: Unknown
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
A -67 dB Sv minimum threshold (based on additional analyses) was used for fish in all regions. No maximum threshold was applied.
All fish backscatter data (NASC=sA in units of m^2/nmi^2) were exported in 0.5 nmi horizontal bins for the entire water column (between 15 m depth and 0.5 m from the bottom in all regions, and from above/below the fish/jellyfish-associate pycnocline (Middle and Outer Domains).
Fish composition was derived using surface and/or midwater trawl catches. Trawls with a minimum non-salmon catch of 20 fish were included in calculations. Any fish species and age-group that constituted a minimum of 5% of the catch (by number) in any individual trawl was included.
The fish composition within each trawl was calculated by converting individual fish species lengths from the measured catch subsample to acoustic target strength (sigmabs) using published TS-length equations.
Surface trawls and shallow midwater trawls were used to classify the "stratified-shallow" and "mixed" fish acoustic data. Differences between surface catches of herring and midwater trawl catches suggested that herring were present within the top 15-20 m of water. For that reason, herring are only estimated for regions classified as mixed. Herring are not included in shallow estimates.
Deep midwater trawls (below the pycnocline) were used to classify the "deep" fish acoustic data. Fish species were classified as "UnkFish" in regions with insufficient deep midwater trawls to identify species.
0.5 nmi acoustic bins were matched with trawl catch composition in ArcMap.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
The dataset contains the following items. Column headers are listed in CAPITAL letters.
INTERVAL is the analytic number for the horizontal bin (0.5 nmi) that references our dataset
ACOUSTDIEL indicates whether the data are from day or night
CATEGORY = whether the data are from "Mixed" (~Inner domain, treated as water column) or "Stratified" (Middle and Outer domains, treated as Shallow (pycnocline and above) and Deep (below the pycnocline)
DATEM is date (in GMT) at the middle of the INTERVAL
LATM is the geographic coordinate (decimal degrees) at the middle of the INTERVAL
LONM is the corresponding geographic coordinate (decimal degrees) at the middle of the INTERVAL
DISTM is for our reference
ORDER is for our reference
_WC = water column estimates from 15 m below the surface to 0.5 m from the bottom. This value is the sum of the _SHALLOW and _DEEP estimates. Mixed regions only have _WC estimates. _SHALLOW data are from 15 m below the surface to the base of the pycnocline-associated fish/jellyfish layer. These data are from the Middle and Outer Domains. _DEEP = data from from the base of the pycnocline-associated fish/jellyfish layer to 0.5 m above the bottom. These data are from the Middle and Outer domains.
<GROUP>NASC (where GROUP is Other, Capelin, Herring01, PacificCod0, Pollock0, Pollock1, SaffronCod1+, and ArcticCod1+) is the acoustic backscatter (NASC in units of m^2/nmi^2) integrated over the depth category (_WC, _SHALLOW, or _DEEP) within the 0.5 nmi INTERVAL. This is the field that should be used for relative distribution **<GROUP>NASC values are additive within a depth category and can be summed to generate a total forage fish estimate
