Macdonald Department of Fisheries and Oceans Institute of Ocean Sciences P.O. Box 6000 Sidney, BC, Canada Dr. Mark B. Yunker 7137 Wallace Drive Brentwood Bay, BC, Canada DATA SET OVERVIEW: This data set represents an analysis of fatty acids and neutral lipids in sediments from an undisturbed core taken with a 10cm diameter Benthos corer without a cutter or catcher during August and September 1987. Sediments were provided sectioned and frozen by a collaborator. Sediments were extracted three times with a mixture of CH2Cl2:MeOH (1:1), and hydrolyzed at 50C for 30 min with a solution of 0.5N KOH in MeOH. After partitioning the fatty acids and neutral lipids with hexande:diethyl ether (9:1), the fatty acids were derivitized with boron trifluoride in methanol. Neutral lipids were derivitized with a solution of bis(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide and pyridine. Lipids were quantified by capillary gas chromatography and identified by mass spectrometry. For a detailed description of the materials and methods, please see Belicka, L.L., Macdonald, R.W., and Harvey, H.R., 2002. Sources and transport of organic carbon to shelf, slope, and basin surface sediments of the Arctic Ocean. Deep-Sea Research Part I, 49:1463-1483. Information can also be found on our website: http://cbl.umces.edu/~harvey/SBI. This data set consists of an excel workbook with three spreadsheets. The first sheet, labeled STN_INFO, contains information about the station, including name, latitude, longitude, water depth in meters, sediment horizon depth in centimeters, percentage of total organic carbon, percentage of total nitrogen, and TOC:TN based on elemental ratios. The second worksheet, labeled Fatty_Acids, contains concentrations (ug lipid/g Org. C) of individual fatty acids in each sediment horizon. Sediment horizons are listed across the top of the sheet, while individual lipids are named in the first column. The page header contains remarks for reading the spreadsheet. The third worksheet, labeled Neutral_Lipids, contains concentrations (ug lipid/g Org. C) of individual hydrocarbons, sterols, and alcohols in each sediment horizon. As with the second worksheet, sediment horizons are listed across the rows, and individual lipids are named in the first column. Comments for the data are located in the header.
