NAMAP: Experimental Climate Prediction Center (ECPC) Regional Spectral Model (RSM) (Masao Kanamitsu) 1.0 Contact Information: Dr. Masao Kanamitsu Research Meteorologist Mail Address: Mail Code 0224 CRD/SIO/UCSD 8605 La Jolla Shores Drive La Jolla, CA 92093-0224 Delivery and Fed Ex: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Nierenberg Hall Rm 223 8810 Shellback Way La Jolla, CA 92037 Tel: 858-822-5176 Fax: 858-534-4163 E-mail: kana@ucsd.edu 2.0 Model Description: The RSM is a limited area atmospheric numerical model system, which is used primarily for daily weather forecasts, and climate simulation of forecasts. 2.1 Model Output: There are three runs made by the ECPC RSM. Run 1: Tier 2 was run as a large number of 36 hour integrations, 6-hourly Reanalysis-2 is used as lateral boundary condition. The submitted outputs are from forecast hour 24 and 36. Tier 1 was also run as a large number of 24 hour integrations. Hourly output from Tier 2 (from forecast hour 12-36) was used as lateral boundary condition. Unfortunately, an error was discovered after the file submission. All the runs (Tier 1 and Tier 2) used surface initial condition of May 1, 1990, thus SST and soil wetness conditions were not correct. This run was kept in the data, since it will provide information on the importance of the land conditions. There was also other errors in the diagnostics, in which some of the fields are missing once a day (1 out of 24). Run 2: Same as Run 1 but the errors are corrected. Directory structures more closely confirms the NAMIP specifications. Run 3: This run is a single long integration of rsm using 6-hourly reanalysis-2 as lateral boundary conditions for Tier 2, and hourly Tier 2 output for Tier 1. Major differences between Run 2 and Run 3 are: 1. Land surface conditions are taken from Reanalysis-2 in Run 2, while they evolve with time in Run 3. 2. There may be a possibility of erroneous large scale fields (spanning the regional domain) developing in the Run 3, which may appear as large scale systematic errors. 2.2 Model Information: Model Name: ECPCIRSM Model Web Page: http://www.ecpc.ucsd.edu/projects/RSM/ Primary Citation: Juang, H.-M and M. CAPE 2. Resolved cloud and subgrid cloud. We only have total cloudiness. The followings need to be computed from provided files. 1. Large scale precip. (PRATE - CPRAT) 2. Total long wave surface flux (DLWRF - ULWRF-sfc) 3. Total short wave surface flux (DSWRF - USWRF-sfc) 4. Moisture flux vectors at standard pressure levels (UGRD-xxx * SPFH-xxx ; VGRD-xxx * SPFH-xxx). xxx=1000, 925, 850, 700 5. Albedo (DSWRF / USWRF-sfc) All outputs are hourly starting from 13Z May 1st, 1990 in one file. The date record on grib file is a verifying date. When using grads, try: gribmaip -0 -i ctlfile. (argument zero to disregard forecast hour). 2.7 Tier 2 Parameters: All the files follow Tier 1 specifications, except that PRATE is hourly and others are 12 hourly. This is because 12 hourly precip needs to be computed from hourly precip. 2.8 Data Notes: There is an occasional missing record. Also not every field has been error checked. If there are any gross errors please contact Dr. Masao Kanamitsu. 3.0 Quality Control No additional quality control was performed on this data by UCAR/JOSS. 4.0 References: The Regional Spectral Model (RSM) http://ecpc.ucsd.edu/projects/RSM/; August 13, 2002 Kanamitsu, Masao, 2002, Scripts Institution of Oceanography; Information supplied with data
