VORTEX94 KTLX WSR-88D Level-II Radar Data 1.0 General Description This data set contains Level-II WSR-88D radar data from the Twin Lakes, OK (KTLX) site in central Oklahoma (35.33N and 97.278W) during periods the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSMT) T-28 aircraft flew for the Verification of the Origins of Rotation in Tornadoes EXperiment - 1994 (VORTEX94) field project. Data are included for the following periods: 6 May 1994: 2105-2354 UTC 9 May 1994: 1646-1959 UTC 23 May 1994: 2101-2355 UTC 24 May 1994: 1300-1456 UTC 25 May 1994: 2245-2355 UTC 26 May 1994: 0001-0157 UTC 29 May 1994: 1205-1517 UTC The NEXRAD Level II data are the three meteorological base data quantities: reflectivity, mean radial velocity, and spectrum width. Depending on the volume coverage pattern in use, the data resolution varies (five, six or ten minutes). A data file consists of a 24 byte volume scan header record followed by numerous 2432 byte base data and message records. 2.0 Data Contact Climate Services Branch National Climatic Data Center Room 468 151 Patton Avenue Asheville, North Carolina 28801-5001 Telephone: 828-271-4800 Facsimile: 828-271-4876 E-mail: ncdc.info@noaa.gov 3.0 File Naming Convention 6500KTLXyyyymmdd_hhmmss.Z 4.0 Visualization Software Please visit http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/radar/radardata.html#VISUALIZE for information on 88D radar visualization software. 5.0 Decoding Sofware Please visit http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/radar/radardata.html#DECODE for information on 88D radar decoding software. 6.0 Other Documentation For additional information please see: http://www.ofcm.gov/fmh11/ Federal Meteorological Handbook No. 11: Doppler Radar Meteorological Observations http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/radar/radarresources.html NCDC Radar Resources
