ASTEX: Atlantic Stratocumulus Transition EXperiment / MAGE

Summary

In the ASTEX/MAGE study, aircraft measurements of mean, turbulent, radiative, and microphysical properties of marine boundary layer clouds were collected and used to study the structure and evolution of clouds. In addition atmospheric chemistry and aerosol measurements were taken to better understand the role of aerosol concentrations and composition on cloud development and structure. The flights were made in support of ASTEX (The Atlantic Stratocumulus Transition Experiment) and MAGE (Marine Aerosol and Gas Exchange: Atmospheric Chemistry and Climate) in June of 1992 in the vicinity of the Azores and Madeira islands.
