IHOP_2002 Satellite: POES NOAA AVHRR Imagery [JOSS]

1.0	General Information

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Polar
Orbiting Environmental Satellites (POES) Advanced Very High Resolution
(AVHRR) Imagery is one of several satellite products collected as part
of the International H20 Project (IHOP_2002) field catalog operated
by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research/Joint Office for
Science Support (UCAR/JOSS; http://www.joss.ucar.edu/ihop/catalog/).
Images from four channels of the AVHRR aboard NOAA 14, 15 and 16 are
included, all at a 1km resolution:
  Channel 1: (visible; 0.58-0.68 um)
  Channel 2: (near-IR; .725-1.0 um)
  Channel 3: (near-IR; 1.58-1.64 um)
  Channel 4: (thermal-IR; 10.3-11.3 um)

The products cover the period from May 12, 2002 through June 26, 2002
and cover the IHOP_2002 sector (32-42N and 90-105W). By nature of the
Polar Orbiting Satellite system the observation times of each satellite
vary from day to day. In general, at least two scans were performed of
the IHOP_2002 region per day and are included in this dataset.

3.0 Product Information

UCAR/JOSS obtained the Advanced Very High Resolution (AVHRR) data
from the portable SeaSpace Terrascan receiver system and developed
sectors of the IHOP_2002 region for the time of interest. This
dataset consists of horizon to horizon scans at 1-km resolution
from the visible channel, two near-IR channels, and one of the
thermal-IR channels of the AVHRR instrument. Images from
NOAA 14, 15 and 16 are included. All images are in JPEG format.

Other information regarding POES and AVHRR can be found at:

4.0 Quality Control Procedures

UCAR/JOSS conducted no quality checks on these data.

5.0 File Naming Convention

The file names are structured as follows:
  ops.noaa-S#.YYYYMMDDmmhh.01km_ch#_NNNNNN.JPG

Where:
  S# is the satellite number
YYYY is the four-digit year of the observation
MM is the month of the observation
DD is the day of the observation
mm is the minute of the observation
hh is the hour of the observation
  01km is the resolution
ch# is the channel of the AVHRR
NNNNN is the name of the channel (vis, near-IR or thermal-IR)
