- Abstract:

One goal of BSIERP (Bering Sea Integrated Ecosystem Research Program) Project 62: Forage Distribution and Ocean Conditions was to measure oceanographic conditions from a fishing vessel in the Bering Sea during the winter Pollock A Season fishery, January-March. Winter measurements in the Bering Sea are rare due to the harsh conditions encountered there. In December 2007, NOAA/PMEL/EcoFOCI scientists outfitted Trident Seafoods F/V Aldebaran with instruments to measure water temperature, salinity and chlorophyll concentration in water pumped from the ship’s sea chest at 3 m depth. Outfitting Aldebaran to make oceanographic measurements had another advantage. She was also used by NOAA as a contract survey vessel during the summer Bering Sea bottom trawl surveys in June-July. Therefore summer measurements were gathered from the same instruments. Both data sets are included in the data files. Maps show the temperature (Fig_6_uw_track_t_intake_2010_Pollock_A_Season.gif and Fig_7_uw_track_t_intake_2010_Bottom_Trawl_Survey.gif), salinity (Fig_8_uw_track_s_calib_2010_Pollock_A_Season.gif and Fig_9_uw_track_s_calib_2010_Bottom_Trawl_Survey.gif), and the chlorophyll-a concentration (Fig_10_uw_track_Chl_calib_2010_Pollock_A_Season.gif and Fig_11_uw_track_Chl_calib_2010_Bottom_Trawl_Survey.gif) along the ship track.

The oceanographic thermometer at the water intake is accurate to 0.001 deg. C with a drift within 0.002 deg. C per year according to the manufacturer; therefore an accuracy no worse than 0.003 degrees would be predicted. The sea chest from which this water is extracted is a box of about a 1 cubic m volume located in the engine room, inset in the bottom of the ship with the lower side open to the sea. It is difficult to estimate how much the sea-chest water might be warmed by the ship. We presume that the box is well-flushed when the ship is moving, and we neglect any potential warming. Thermosalinograph salinites were compared to discrete salinity samples taken approximately daily and analyzed in the laboratory with a Guildline Autosal. The two time series were differenced, and any difference was assumed to be from thermosalinograph drift. Three different drift rates were found as the season progressed. Figures 1-2 show the difference trends. For each, the thermosalinograph salinity was detrended and calibrated against the Autosal salinities using a linear least-squares method (Figures 3-4). The root-mean-square error of a least-squares fit of thermosalinograph salinity versus the discrete samples analyzed in the laboratory was no larger than 0.035 psu with an r-squared of 0.991 (Figure 3). Underway chlorophyll fluorescence measurements were compared to discrete samples analyzed in the laboratory. The root-mean-square error of a least-squares chlorophyll fit versus 63 discrete samples was 0.73 micrograms/l with an r-squared of 0.59 (Figure 5).

Quality control was carried out, time series were scrutinized and plots of variables along the ship track were checked. The data values are within the expected range for these oceanographic variables. One large data gap exists between the end of the Pollock A Season and the start of the summer bottom trawl survey because no measurements were made in this time period.

David Strausz, Antonio Jenkins and Edward Cokelet installed oceanographic instruments on F/V Aldebaran in December 2007 as part of BSIERP. The instruments were plumbed using copper-nickel pipe by shipyard workers at Trident Seafoods, the ship’s owner, in Seattle. The underway seawater sampling system consists of: 3/4-inch copper-nickel piping from the ship’s sea chest in the engine room drawing water from about 3 m depth to the instruments; a Sea-Bird Electronics (SBE) SBE 38 digital oceanographic thermometer (<http://www.seabird.com/products/spec_sheets/38data.htm>) to measure water temperature at the water intake; a strainer to remove large particles; a Hydracell MO3 positive displacement pump with ¼ hp Baldor motor and variable speed drive pumping water at ½ gal/min; a SUNY (State University of New York) vortex debubbler to remove air bubbles from the water before it reaches the instruments; an electromagnetic flow meter to measure the water flow rate in the system; an SBE 45 MicroTSG thermosalinograph (<http://www.seabird.com/products/spec_sheets/45data.htm>) to measure salinity; a WETLabs ECO fluorometer with bio-wiper (<http://www.wetlabs.com/products/eflcombo/fl.htm>) to measure chlorophyll fluorescence; a GPS receiver to measure the ship’s position; and a Windows computer running NOAA’s SCS (Scientific Computer System) to record the observations. Observations were recorded at intervals of 1 second to 1 minute dependent upon the instrument. Discrete salinity and chlorophyll samples were taken daily by a NOAA Fisheries Observer during the Bering Sea Pollock A Season (Jan-Mar) or by a NOAA fisheries scientist during the summer bottom trawl survey (Jun-Jul). These were analyzed in the laboratory after the field season and used to calibrate the salinity and chlorophyll samples.

Digital position, flow rate, temperature, salinity and chlorophyll fluorescence observations recorded at various rates were linearly interpolated onto a common time axis with 1-minute increments. Data were determined to be invalid if values fell outside threshold ranges, most commonly because the flow rate was too low or the intake and thermosalinograph temperature difference was too large – both conditions indicating restricted flow. The threshold values were based on common sense and experience gained from working with the data.
Salinity values from the thermosalinograph time series were extracted at the times of the discrete salinity samples that had been analyzed in the laboratory with an Autosal. Temporal trends were removed (Figs. 1-3). A least-squares linear fit showed a strong correlation between the digital and discrete samples with correlation coefficients and accuracies shown in Figures 4-6. .
Chlorophyll fluorescence was scaled to chlorophyll concentration based upon the fluorometer manufacturer’s specifications. Values from this time series were extracted at the times of the discrete chlorophyll samples that had been analyzed in the laboratory using the acidification method. A least-squares linear fit showed a correlation between the digital and discrete samples with correlation coefficient and accuracy shown in Figure 7.
