Abstract:
We used GPS (Gipsy,Technosmart, 10 g) receivers in combination of time depth recorders (LOTEK) to obtain the diving locations and parameters of Thick-billed murres (Uria lomvia) nesting at the two Pribilof Islands (St. Paul and St. George) in 2008, 2009 and 2010. We obtained dive data in all years except at St. Paul in 2009. Dive locations were obtained in 2009 and 2010 at St. George and only in 2010 at St. Paul. Dive data were processed using a purpose built zero-offset correction algorithm and analysis program written in MATLAB (IKNOS-DIVE, IKNOS toolbox, Y. Tremblay unpubl.). Dives were classified according to daylight periods (day, crepuscular and nocturnal; Harding et al. In Press). Daily time of sunrise, sunset, and twilight at each island were obtained from the Astronomical Applications Department, U. S. Naval Observatory,Washington, DC 20392-5420. Nocturnal dives were defined as occurring between evening and morning astronomical twilight, day dives between sunrise and sunset, and crepuscular dives between astronomical twilight and sunrise or sunset. Dive parameters included dive depth, dive duration, bottom time, post-dive interval, descend and ascend rates, dive efficiency “wiggles” during parts of a dive (oscillations that may indicate feeding events) and others.
Purpose:
This data was used to identify feeding areas, estimate dive effort duirng trips according to time of day (day and overnight) and habitat use (slope, shelf). Dive locations were also used to calculated frequency of dives and mean depth according to daylight, nocturnal and crepucular hours in each bathymetric habitat (Middle Shelf = 100 m; Outer Shelf = 200 m; Slope > 200 m).
