- Abstract:
-
This data set was collected as part of the Chukchi Sea Environmental Studies Program (CSESP), a multi-year, interdisciplinary ecological study focused on areas in outer continental shelf oil and gas leases in the northeastern Chukchi Sea. In 2008 when the program began, two 30 x 30 nautical mile study area boxes were developed around areas of interest to ConocoPhillips and Shell. The ConocoPhillips study area (named Klondike), and the Shell study area (named Burger) became the focus of data collection. Data were collected from these two study areas again in 2009. Then, in 2010, Statoil joined the program, and a third study area, Statoil, was created and sampled as well as Klondike and Burger. In 2011, the scope of the study area was expanded to include the Hanna Shoal Regional Study Area.
The CSESP interdisciplinary studies include acoustic monitoring, baseline chemistry, benthic ecology, chemical oceanography, fisheries ecology, marine mammal ecology, physical oceanography, plankton ecology and nutrients, and seabird observations.
This dataset contains Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) data collected with a Teledyne RDI 600 kHz Workhorse Monitor ADCP in the Chukchi Sea during the open water season 2010-2011. Mounted on the research vessel the Westward Wind, the ADCP was run continuously during survey cruises that collected oceanographic condition measurements and biological data at fixed sampling station locations and along transect lines. ADCP data parameters include the name of the vessel the data was collected on; the dates and times in Greenwich Mean Time that the data was collected; the latitude and longitude of the location the data was collected at; the total water depth and bin depth at which the data was collected; the east to west, north to south, vertical, and error velocity; the percentage of good measurements in the ensemble; the vessel speed and orientation; the name of the contractor who recorded and analyzed the data; the title of the annual report the data set supports; and as applicable, notes regarding a data record.
- Purpose:
-
The objectives of the Chukchi Sea Environmental Baseline Studies Program are:
1. To provide data for pre-exploration and development-related activities
2. To provide data for permit applications
3. To provide input to planning of future operations and associated mitigation
4. To provide additional baseline data that can be used to assess and measure the potential environmental effects of offshore oil and gas exploration and development in the northeastern Chukchi Sea

Edition 2 Updates: Appended 2011 data, updated metadata to include details about 2011 season, geographic projection updated from NAD83 to WGS84.
The system used to collect the ADCP data was a 600 kHz Teledyne RDI Workhorse Monitor, which was attached to a downward-facing pole. The ADCP was connected to the main computer located on the vessel for real-time data collection through RDI software. There is a large data gap of approximately fifteen days in late September when the Westward Wind was being used for research in the Beaufort Sea and another approximately three day gap in mid-August, beginning on August 16th with normal data collection resuming on August 19th when ADCP data files and navigation files were not synchronized with one another. Gaps where data were collected, but were poor quality, mostly correspond to periods of high winds where a rough sea state presumably caused bubble entrainment below the transducer. Overall, data quality decreased when the vessel was in heavy seas. During data processing, each one second ping (data recording) was grouped into one minute ensembles and averaged into six-hour bins, with each bin number two meters apart. In order to form a 6-hour average, at least 25% of the ensembles collected during that 6-hour period had to have had good data.
- Logical_Consistency_Report:
-
When grouping the one second pings or data recordings from the ADCP, the following conditions had to be met for the data to be included:
-A minimum correlation of 64 %
-A minimum percent good 4-beam +3-beam solutions of 50%
-A minimum percent-good bottom track pings of 25%
-Blanking above bottom threshold (% of distance to transducer) of 6%
-Maximum heading standard deviation of 3
-Maximum change in speed of 0.2 m/s
-Minimum speed of 1.5 m/s
-Maximum vertical velocity of 0.1 m/s
-Maximum error velocity of 0.05 m/s
-Minimum good fraction of water profile allowed 2/3
-Individual ensemble cross-track magnitude/direction corrections
-Transducer mis-alignment corrections -0.49
- Ensembles were removed with unrealistically large mean velocities (> 2 m/s)
- Removed adjacent ensembles with unrealistically large change in velocity -0.25% of outliers were removed
