Abstract:

Black-legged Kittiwakes and Thick-billed Murres were collected with a shotgun as they were foraging, or were associated with foraging flocks at sea. Specimens were frozen immediately and stomachs were removed upon return to land and sent to Kathy Turco in Fairbanks for analysis of hard and soft prey tissue contents. During this process, basic morphometrics were completed and recorded.

Purpose:

Verification of prey species eaten by focal seabird study species included in the Patch Dynamics Study portion of the Bering Sea Research Project B67&B77

Prey ID cannot be independently proofed, as stomachs were sent for analyses to an off-site facility and contents were disposed of in that process. However, the technician (Kathy Turco) has extensive experience in relevant prey ID techniques and processes, and gut contents data are not incongruous with previous studies of these species.

Nathan Jones proofed and corrected the entries to ascertain that specimen numbers matched stomach contents among birds and between years. Data columns in spreadsheet were checked for outlying values. Some values missing would indicate data unavailable (check notes; some birds damaged in ways preventing measurements), or data not recorded.

Birds were collected with a shotgun while they foraged at sea within 200 km of the Pribilof Islands and extending down to within 200 km of Bogoslof Island. Flash frozen immediately, then dissected and stomachs sent to expert for prey item identification and quantification.
