FEAST (Forage Euphausiid in Space and Time NPRB B.70 Model output for 1970-2009 Hindcast (Run V146), Kerim Aydin and Andre Punt

- Description:

- Abstract:
-
Part of The Bering Sea Project, FEAST is a high resolution (~10km2) spatial model that uses a Regional Ocean Modeling System for the Bering Sea (ROMS Bering-10K), with two way feedback to a Nutrient-Phytoplankton-Zooplankton Model and two way feedback to a multispecies bioenergetics fish model.
- Purpose:
-
The set of files contain the necessary code and directory structure to run simulations of oceanographic, lower trophic levels and fish related variables. Output provides deterministic estimates for the biophysics, lower trophic levels and fish. The code is in fortran; the calculations are computer intensive and is setup for parallel processing in a high performance computing cluster. Forcing files and file structure included are for the period 1970-2009.
- Supplemental_Information:
-
The following weeks (year_week) need to be run at a smaller timestep to prevent some physical variables from blowing up (mainly velocities close to shore): 1971_1, 1972_48, 1974_48, 1977_47, 1984_5, 1989_47, 1990_48, 2004_51, 2004_52. Examine the commands in kerim-make.sh to determine how to compile;
The model is run the same as any standard ROMS model. The file system provided is in exactly the way it should be set up for the model to run; the initial file is good to go and shell files were included to provide examples of how to run FEAST. This is not an entry level model, and potential users would be better served learning about ROMS first and then contacting us directly. Experienced ROMS users will quickly recognize format and files, ROMS based models are written in Fortran (so is FEAST).
Full documentation of ROMS (Technical documentation, User guide, as well as Examples and applications are available at https://www.myroms.org/wiki/index.php/Documentation_Portal. This portal docuemnts how to parametrize the files referred to in the shell scripts
Sample shell (.sh) scripts of how to run FEAST are included in the feast_ten folder, the latest version that runs only one simulation job at a time is kerim-ten-summer-promiojob1-allcores. Several jobs may be run simultaneously but care must be taken to either include the appropriate ghost links or change file names so as to not
substitute parameter/ initial files inadvertedly.
Also note that this will have to be tuned to the compiler, core structure, and paths of your system. For further details, consult the ROMS documentation.

ROMS is used as the platform, the model is started in July 1 1970, with the fish being able to move but not grow. This is to get a starting date of January 1971 with fish distributed where there is prey available. Summer fish distribution is taken from the average distribution of fish in a neutral year based on data from yearly 1982-2009 bottom trawl surveys coinducted by the Alaska Fisheries Science Center. For conveneince, we have included the starting conditions for January.
Simulation took place in July-August 2013 at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center, code was developed 2007-2013 and is still in development
