FEAST (Forage Euphausiid in Space and Time NPRB B.70 Model output for 1970-2009 Hindcast (Run V146), Kerim Aydin and Andre Punt
- Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: tabular digital data
- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
Biomass of fixed fish species in the FEAST model. Part of The Bering Sea Project, FEAST is a high resolution (~10km2) spatial model that uses a Regional Ocean Modeling System for the Bering Sea (ROMS Bering-10K), with two way feedback to a Nutrient-Phytoplankton-Zooplankton Model and two way feedback to a multispecies bioenergetics fish model.
- Purpose:
-
The hindcast goes from week 2 of 1971 to week 52 of 2009, and provides deterministic estimates for the biophysics, lower trophic levels and fish. Historical fisheries removals were included in the hindcast simulation but are not part of the output files due to confidentiality restrictions. Catch data is archived at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center.
- Supplemental_Information:
-
The name the file refers to fixed fish species which feed but neither grow nor move, the serve as fixed prey fields and are modeled as one biomass pool. This output file is not a raw FEAST output nc file. This is a processed output file. A fortran script was used to extract and aggregate the fixed fish species output from the HISTORY files; a subsequent ferret script was used to regrid all location to lat-lon as opposed to x,y.
The biomass and location of these fish species remained the same throughout the entire hindcast simulation, hence there is only one output file, rather than a weekly one as for the other variables and fish output in the model.
The geographical domain of the model is larger rectangular; here we have included only the rectangle covering the shelf/slope portion of the eastern Bering Sea; the fill value for all fields is -1.0E34//float and should be used for the geographical extent of the model not included here. Most physical fields get boundary inputs but biological ones do not. Therefore, there may be either boundary values (the border of the rectangular grid), or large extents where contiguous values of a given field range between -1 and 0 (even when negative values for that given field are invalid).
See sample image Pollock_average_length_age_05_latlon_HC_1999_49, where negative values are not valid for length but they appear at the boundary

ROMS is used as the platform, the model is started in July 1 1970, with the fish being able to move but not grow. This is to get a starting date of January 1971 with fish distributed where there is prey available. Summer fish distribution is taken from the average distribution of fish in a neutral year based on data from yearly 1982-2009 bottom trawl surveys conducted by the Alaska Fisheries Science Center. Raw model output for fish is processed to aggregate age/length/species output in an age/species format and regrid the output into latitude and longitude coordenates (as opposed to i,j). Simulation took place in July-August 2013 at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center.
