Spatial Economic Models of Pollock and Cod, 1991-2013, Haynie A.
- Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: tabular digital data
- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
The primary data utilized in the research are data from the North Pacific Observer Program (<http://www.afsc.noaa.gov/FMA/>) and economic production and price information from the Alaska Fisheries Information Network (AKFIN, <http://www.akfin.org/>). The observer data that were utilized in this project contain information on the hauls and sets for the fisheries. We also utilized production National Marine Fisheries Service Production data and price data from the Commercial Operators Annual Report (COAR), accessed through AFSC and AKFIN. For the vessel monitoring system (VMS) data, we utilize AFSC database which has link to the NMFS Enforcement database.
- Purpose:
-
These data were developed to examine the spatial behavior of these fisheries to determine how they respond to changing environmental conditions.
- Supplemental_Information:
-
The confidential nature of these data prevent their open distribution, but researchers can contact NMFS to attempt to access the data.

The data have come from the Oracle-based AFSC database and Oracle-based AKFIN China database. We have used Microsoft Access 2003, Matlab (various recent updates), Stata 13, and R (version 3.1 and earlier) to manipulate and analyze the data.

The North Pacific observer program is considered among the best sources of fisheries-dependent data in the world. The production data and price data used in the model are relatively consistent across time and reporting units, but it is self-reported data so is subject to an unknown amount of error.
- Logical_Consistency_Report:
-
The distributions for all variables were examined. A small number of outlier values were identified and deleted or corrected as possible and appropriate
- Completeness_Report:
-
For the Pacific cod fishery, a number of vessels had only 30 percent of their days fishing covered by the observer program for most of the study period. Depending on the question being considered, we only focused on larger vessels (>= 125 feet) that had 100 percent of their fishing covered. Prior to 2002, catcher processor vessels were not required to submit COAR value information, so the price data prior to this period is often imputed from other vessels or shore-side processors.
