GIDS-1 TVA Dam Discharge Dataset 1.0 General Description This is one of three hydrological datasets provided as part of the GEWEX Continental-scale International Project (GCIP) Initial Dataset One (GIDS-1). The GIDS-1 Tennessee Valley Authority Dam Discharge dataset contains data from approximately 45 sites in Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina and surrounding states. This dataset covers a subset of the complete GIDS-1 area which is approximately 85W to 106W longitude and 30N to 45N latitude. The TVA Dam Discharge dataset contains data values of hourly turbine discharge and total discharge reported for the complete GIDS-1 time period from 01 February 1992 through 30 April 1992. No additional quality control (QC) was performed on this dataset by the UCAR/Office of Field Project Support (UCAR/OFPS). 2.0 Detailed Data Description The TVA Dam Discharge dataset is provided in the same format in which it was received. These data are in a single file which contains alternating header records and data records. The user must carefully review this dataset to locate and note the several different types of header records. The header records immediately preceding the data records indicate the stations for which the data are valid. The data records are also very unique, and the user must examine the data before using this dataset. Each data record contains data collected for several stations. The data values are reported in cubic feet per second and are average values for the preceding hour. These hourly averages are valid for hours 01 to 24 local time. The table below details the order and description of each data parameter in a record. Note that the observation number is a number internal to the dataset and has no relation to any station identification number. The observation number repeats in sets of six data lines until the data values for a particular date have been listed for all stations. Be aware that the observation number is reset to one approximately two-thirds of the way through the dataset. Not all stations report both Total and Turbine Discharge values. The Turbine and Total Discharge parameters described below are repeated from one to thirteen times in a single data line. Parameters Units (C format) OBS Observation number (Unitless) (`%6d '). IDATE Local date of observation (YYMMDD) (`%6d '). IHOUR Local Hour of Observation (`%2d '). name_TU Turbine Discharge in Cubic Feet per second for station whose ID is 'name'. ('%7d ') name_TO Total Discharge in Cubic Feet per second for station whose ID is 'name'. ('%7d ') 2.1 Data Remarks Not all stations report both Total Discharge and Turbine Discharge each hour. If the Total Discharge is '9999999' then the actual Total Discharge is the same value as the Turbine Discharge value. Times reported are local time and days begin at local hour 1 and end at local hour 24. 2.2 Sample Data The following is a sample of one type of header record in the TVA Dam Discharge dataset. Since these header records indicate the stations for which the data is valid, there are many unique header records. Also, there are general title header records at approximately every 50 lines in this dataset. The user must carefully review this dataset prior to using it. Unlike this example, there are no carriage returns in the data. See section 2.0 for a detailed data description.
