Lake-ICE Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory Dataset 1.0 General Description This dataset contains only the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) surface data. This dataset is a collection of seven datasets: NDBC Buoy, CMAN, U.S. Coast Guard, Ship reports, Other Marine Reports, Surface Synoptic, and Surface Airways. Data for the Lake-Induced Convection Experiment (Lake-ICE) domain (37N to 55N latitude and 73W to 104W longitude) and time period (28 November 1997 through 25 January 1998) are contained within this dataset. This GLERL dataset contains data from 219 stations. No quality control was performed by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research/Joint Office for Science Support (JOSS). 2.0 Detailed Data Description A detailed description of the data is not available at this time. 2.1 Detailed Format Description The GLERL surface data contains six metadata parameters and ten data parameters. The metadata parameters describe the station type, time of data collection, and the associated lake. Ship observations contain an additional two metadata paramters giving the latitude and longitude of the ship at the time the data were collected. The time of observation is reported in Universal Time. The table below details the data parameters in each record. Columns Description ------- ----------- 1- 2 Last two digits of year of observation 3- 5 Julian day of observation 6- 9 GMT hour and minute of observation (HHMM) 10-10 Station type: 0 = Buoy 1 = CMAN station 2 = U.S. Coast Guard station 3 = Ship report 4 = OMR (Other Marine Reports) station 5 = Surface Synoptic station 6 = Surface Airways station 11-18 Station ID code 19-19 Lake number: 0 = Superior 1 = Michigan 2 = Huron 3 = St. Clair 4 = Erie 5 = Ontario 6 = Georgian Bay 20-22 Air temperature in degrees Fahrenheit 23-25 Dew point in degrees Fahrenheit 26-28 Wind direction in degrees 29-30 Wind speed in knots 31-32 Maximum wind gust in knots 33-33 Cloud amount in octas: 9 for sky obscured 34-38 Sea level pressure in tenths of a millibar 39-40 Water temperature in degrees Fahrenheit 41-42 Wave height in feet 43-44 Wave period in seconds The following fields are included in ship reports ONLY: 45-48 Latitude in hundredths of a degree 49-52 Longitude in hundredths of a degree 2.2 Data Remarks This dataset contains all GLERL surface data for the Lake-ICE time period. Data for the Lake-ICE time period that fell on hourly or incremental times and were within the Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX) Continental-scale International Project (GCIP) Enhanced Seasonal Observing Period - 1998 (ESOP-98) domain were also included in the ESOP 1998 Surface Composite. Missing data are indicated by blank fields. 3.0 Quality Control Processing This dataset was not quality controlled. 4.0 References None.
