Megaepifauna and fish were collected during the WEBSEC-72 cruise to the US Beaufort Sea in August 1972. The data were entered into a benthic data base at Oregon State University and some limited information derived from 35 taxa within the data set was published in: Carey AG Jr, Ruff RE, Castillo JG, Dickinson JJ (1974) Benthic ecology of the western Beaufort Sea continental margin: preliminary results, In Reed JC, Sater JE (eds) The coast and shelf of the Beaufort Sea, Proceedings of a symposium on Beaufort Sea Coast and Shelf Research, Arctic Institute of North America. Species distribution maps of some taxa were published in: Environmental Assessment of the Alaskan Continental Shelf, Annual Report of Principal Investigators for the year ending March 1977, Vol VI, Receptors - Fish, Littoral, Benthos. Dr. Carey transferred printouts of the trawl data (along with data from Van Veen grabs) to Susan Schonberg at the Institute of Marine Science at the University of Texas Austin (Port Aransas) in the early 2000s, who later sent scans of those to Dr. Bodil Bluhm at the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 2013. Dr. Carey also mailed photocopies of some notes to Bluhm in 2011. Bluhm digitized the data and updated the taxonomic names to the World Register of Marine Species (as of March 2013) under a grant by the Oil Spill Recovery Institute (see Funding Source and Grant Number section for contract number). As part of the OSRI grant, Dr. Gordon Hendler at the National History Museum of Los Angeles County, where a large part of the voucher material was archived, identified a number of lots of brittle stars. Dr. Philip Lambert from the Royal BC Museum identified holothurian lots to species level during a visit to NHMLAC. Other voucher material from Carey's Arctic studies is archived at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. ---INSTRUMENT DESCRIPTION: Megaepifauna and fish were collected with a 3.7 m semi-balloon shrimp trawl equipped with a 1.3 cm stretch mesh inner liner. ---DATA COLLECTION and PROCESSING: Twenty-two hauls were successfully retrieved at depths ranging from 27 to 721 m depth. Trawl duration ranged from 5-30 min at the bottom, but durations or area covered were not specified in the documentation available, and absolute abundances per unit area could therefore not be calculated. Counts were reported for all taxa in the haul with zeros indicating presence of colonial taxa. ---DATA FORMAT: Data are in Excel spreadsheet format. Parameters include: CruiseID (Cruise ID) StationNum (Station Number) StationNme (Station Name) DataDate (Date of Data Collection) - YYYYMMDD DataYear (Year of Data Collection) - YYYY DataTime (Time of Data Collection) TimeZone (Time Zone of DataDate) - AKST (Alaska Standard Time) UTCOffset (UTC Offset) - -9:00 UTC Latitude - DD.DD Longitude - -DDD.DD Depth(m) - meters TaxonOrigi (Original Taxonomy) TaxonWoRMS (World Register of Marine Species Taxonomy) RawCount (Raw Count) Gear Mesh_mm (Mesh) - milimeters Trawl_time (Trawl Time) - minutes AreaTrawled (Area Trawled) - unknown VolSorted (Volume Sorted) - gallons Vessel - USCGC Glacier PrincipInv (Principal Investigator) - Andrew Carey Institution - Oregon State University Attribute TaxonOrigi stands for TaxonOriginal, i.e. as mentioned in the source. TaxonWoRMS is updated for the currently accepted name by the World Register of Marine Species at marinespecies.org. ---DATA REMARKS: It is unclear why additional taxa were included with zeroes, but it seems as if zeroes were assigned to some infaunal taxa that occurred but were not caught quantitatively. It is also unclear if the reported counts were derived from the entire haul or from a subsample. The available documentation contained data on 'Container volume' in gallons and hand-written notes that rough sorting was conducted from Dec 1972-Aug 1973. ---REFERENCES: - Carey AG Jr, Ruff RE, Castillo JG, Dickinson JJ (1974) Benthic ecology of the western Beaufort Sea continental margin: preliminary results, In Reed JC, Sater JE (eds) The coast and shelf of the Beaufort Sea, Proceedings of a symposium on Beaufort Sea Coast and Shelf Research, Arctic Institute of North America. - Environmental Assessment of the Alaskan Continental Shelf, Annual Report of Principal Investigators for the year ending March 1977, Vol VI, Receptors - Fish, Littoral, Benthos.
