UMRBPP Custer, South Dakota Profiler Wind Profiles Data Set 1.0 Contact Rand Feind Institute of Atmospheric Sciences - IAS South Dakota School of Mines and Technology 501 East St. Joseph Street Rapid City, South Dakota 57701 Phone: (605) 394-1957 email: rfeind@msmailgw.sdsmt.edu 2.0 General Description This data set consists of wind profiles generated by a research wind profiler located at Custer, South Dakota for the Upper Missouri River Basin Pilot Project (UMRBPP). The data collection took place from 31 March to 10 May 1999. Wind profiles were measured every 30 minutes. 3.0 Detailed Description With a few exceptions, there is a wind profile at each 6 hr interval (i.e., 00, 06, 12, 18), starting on 5 April 99 and ending on 3 May 99. (A total of 113 possible sounding times.) A wind profile is derived from 30 minutes of measurements. The MDT corresponds to the midpoint of that interval (e.g., the profile from 1744MDT is derived from measurements obtained over the interval from 1730MDT to 1800MDT.) The profile time is 16 minutes from the ztime (minus 6 hours). For example, the 00Z profile is based on 1744MDT wind profile data (from the previous day). There are two types of files contained in this data set, those with the file extention w2a and w4a. The w2a files contain winds at approximately 100 m intervals from about 180 to 2500 m above the ground. The w4a files contain winds at approximately 400 m intervals from about 350 to 4600 m above the ground. 4.0 Quality Control Codes The following codes were supplied by the source agency and were not adjusted by UCAR/JOSS. No additional quality control was performed by UCAR/JOSS. QC codes apply to wind speed and direction QC Code Definition: 0=Valid 1=Valid, no vertical correction 2=Unassigned 3=Unassigned 4=Unassigned 5=Unassigned 6=Unassigned 7=Suspect 8=Invalid 9=Missing or failed consensus Data Code Definition: -940=Failed QC -950=Failed consensus -960=Exceeded Nyquist Velocity -980=Flagged by reviewer -999=Missing or not reported
