INSTRUMENT DESCRIPTION: (1) Biomass was collected using a 20 x 50 cm aluminum frame. (2) LAI data obtained using the LI-COR LAI-2000 Plant Canopy Analyzer. DATA COLLECTION AND PROCESSING: (1) Along each 100 meter transect line, biomass "clips" were performed at (usually) the 5 meter, 25 meter, and 45 meter points along the tape. The "clips" consist of clipping/collecting all biomass from within a 20 x 50 cm ( 0.1 m2) frame. In the lab, the biomass is then separated by functional type and by live/dead, then dried in the oven at 50 C, and weighed. (2) LAI measurements were obtained by taking readings from the LAI meter (one above the canopy, and one below) every meter for the 50 meters along each transect. Four LAI measurements were also taken within each 20 x 50 cm (0.1m2) area biomass harvest area, or "clip", prior to harvesting. For biomass data see the _biomass.xls file for this site. LAI instrumentation used was the LI-COR LAI-2000 Plant Canopy Analyzer. NDVI measurements were obtained from Jia Jiong and Howie Epstein at the University of Virginia.
