ATLAS: SSWG Snow Depth Data This dataset contains snow depth measurements taken by the Snow, Shrubs, and Weather Group at and around the Ivotuk site as part of the Atlas project. Two different schemes of measurement were performed: in a grid format and a line format. This data is for the winters of 1998-1999 and 1999-2000 and was taken in no particular time series. Below are the investigators notes on each grid or line and the file names that contain the data. Note: There are tab delimited tables below. For better viewing you may want to reset your tabstop. Seven different sets of data (sites) are available: 1) 100 Meter Grid 2) CALM Grid Data 3) Camp to Iteriak Creek Line Data 4) Kucher Creek Main Line Data 5) Outhouse to Otuk Line Data 6) SE Lake Line Data 7) Vegetation Grids Data 100 Meter Grid Data =================== Files: 100m_grid*.txt ATLAS Sturm and others "Four grids, 100m on a side, were established in the summer of 1998." They were chosen as being representative of the four major vegetation types in the area. Each grid has corner posts and markers at every 10m intersection. All snowdepths are in cm good to +-0.5cm. All temperatures are in —C good to +-0.2 —. Distances are in meters. Depths in cm Its Corners are: UTM northing easting NE Corner 7599500 388500 SE Corner 7598500 388500 SW Corner 7598500 387500 NW Corner 7599500 387500 Camp to Iteriak Creek Line Data =============================== Files: iteriak_line*.txt ATLAS Sturm and others The camp to Iteriak Creek line was established in November 1998. It heads from the cabin at Ivotuk perpendicularly across the runway and then generally West towards the high point of a conical mountain just the other side of Iteriak Creek It traverses a gentle west facing slope and down across two branches of Iteriak Creek. Snow depth was hand probed along the Outhouse to Iteriak line six times. "Probing was done using a ""Magnaprobe"" depth measuring device accurate to +- 0.5 cm." At each point the location was measured using a Trimble differential GPS. Eight Rebar were used to mark the line and they were numbered K1 to K8 Snow depths were measured using a Magnaprobe device accurate to +- 0.5 cm Locations were taken with a Trimble differential GPS. It heads generally west from the outhouse at Ivotuk directly toward the highest point on Otuk peak. It ends on the West side of Otuk Creek and is about 1480 meters long Snow depth was hand probed along the Outhouse to Otuk line nine times. It runs generally SE from the cabin at Ivotuk 5943 meters ending on a small peak. It crosses Otuk Creek and one other giving a good representation of the creek vegetation. Snow depth was hand probed along theSE Lake line seven times. "Probing was done using a ""Magnaprobe"" depth measuring device accurate to +- 0.5 cm."
