Title: Wind profiles derived from WindCube70 Doppler Lidar observations Location: Ellis, KS (PECAN Fixed PISA station #3) Lat/Lon: 38.958 degN, -99.574 degE Date updated: 15 August 2016 Contacts: John Hanesiak, Univ Manitoba (John.Hanesiak@umanitoba.ca) Dave Turner, NOAA (dave.turner@noaa.gov) --- Background The University of Manitoba deployed a Leosphere WindCube70 to the Ellis, Kansas fixed PISA site (FP-3) for PECAN. This doppler lidar operated a single scan strategy for the entire experiment, collecting radial velocities at four azimuth angles (0, 90, 180, and 270 degrees) and a fixed zenith angle of 14.84 degrees. The Leosphere software processed these observations using the Doppler beam swinging technique to derive the wind fields. These derivations are what is stored in the netCDF files. In the vertical velocity field "w", positive values indicate upward motion. Note: the lidar was not oriented properly to true north, and an offset of 22 degrees has been added to the wind direction measurements from the lidar. This brings the wind direction into good agreement with both the sondes and the colocated 449 MHz wind profiling radar that was at the FP3 site. --- END
