HLY-04-03 Spring 2004 Cruise CD-ROM Readme file *** Mac users, please see the note at the end of this file or read the README_MAC_USERS.TXT file. This CD ROM was created 25 August 2004 at the end of the SBI Summer Cruise aboard the USCGC Healy. It is a subset of the JOSS HLY-04-03 field catalog and contains the data in the state they were in as of the end of the cruise. At that time, the CTD and bottle data were in their final form. The state (preliminary or final) of all others datasets on this CD was unknown at that time. This CD can be viewed with a Web browser by opening the file "index.html" in the top level directoryr or the directory structure can be browsed directly. The CD is organized as follows: Main Folders: daily_reports: This directory contains the files found under the "reports" section of the JOSS field catalog. They include the Chief Scientist progress reports, daily photos, and Stephen Schmidt's daily teachers journals. The file index.html provides a tubular index of all the files. satellite_images: This directory contains sample DMSP and NOAA AVHR satellite images. The data was collected on board the ship in real-time using the Seaspace satellite receiving station. DMSP visible image loops were generated when there was a clear view of the ice allowing the visualization of ice movement and inferred surface current. Sea surface temperature images were generated from the NOAA AVHRR sensor. A series of GIF images were generated from 2004/07/25 04:18 to 2004/08/15 23:51 UTC and looped. Also several SST composite Geotiffs were created. The geotif files have projection information embedded in each files so they can be read into most GIS tools. These SST images are for browse purposes only and should not use for analysis. station_data: This area contains the station specific data and information that was part of the SBI Field Catalog. The file index.html in this directory contains links to all the other data and plots in this subdirectory. XCTD data is included in this area. These files will reside in their entirety in the SBI Summer 2004 Field Catalog at JOSS once the cruise is completed. Due to the long files names used, support for ISO9660 was not possible. Therefore, there is no guarantee that the files name will no be altered on untested platforms breaking the html pages. This CD was tested on WindowsXP, Linux Redhat9 and Mac OS X. Mac users must NOT use Internet Explorer to view this CD. Internet Explorer will truncate all file names to 31 characters in length thus breaking the links in all the html pages. Internet Explorer is no longer being supported by Microsoft on Mac systems so it is recommended that you use other supported browsers like Safari or Mozilla.
