DYCOMS-II Model: COAMPS 6km Imagery Subset (GIF) 1.0 General Information The COAMPS 6km Imagery (GIF) is one of several model products collected as part of the Dynamics and Chemistry of Marine Stratocumulus Phase II: Entrainment Studies (DYCOMS-II) project field catalog operated by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research/Joint Office for Science Support (UCAR/JOSS; http://www.joss.ucar.edu/dycoms/catalog/). The plots are from the Coupled Atmospheric Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS) model which was run by the Naval Research Laboratory in a special mode for DYCOMS-II. Three nested grids were used: a 54km resolution grid, an inner 18 km grid, and a small 6 km grid over the DYCOMS-II target area. This data set contains a subset of the imagery from the 6km grid. Included are surface, 925 mb, and 850 mb maps, cloud base height, cloud top temperature, cloud mixing ratio, and water vapor mixing ratio for the analysis time and forecast imagery every three hours to 24 hours. The model was run at 00 and 12 UTC each day. The products cover the period from 1 - 31 July 2001 (no imagery available 23 and 25 July) and cover the region from 30-33 N and 119-123 W. All images are in GIF format. 2.0 Data Contact Melanie Wetzel (wetzel@dri.edu) 3.0 Product Information The following products are available on the 6km grid over the region 30-33 N and 119-123 W: Cloud Base Height, Cloud Top Temperature, 500m Cloud Mixing Ratio, 10m Winds/Air Temperature/Sea Level Pressure, 850mb Winds/Relative Humidity/Geopotential Height, and 925mb Winds/Relative Humidity/Geopotential Height. Also, the Cloud Mixing Ratio and Water Vapor Mixing Ratio are available in crossection from 119-123 W and 0-3000 m in height. 4.0 Quality Control Procedures UCAR/JOSS conducted no quality checks on these data. 5.0 File Naming Convention The file names are structured as follows: COAMPS_06km.yyyymmddhhmm.ff_prod.gif Where COAMPS_06km is the data type yyyy is the four digit year mm is the two digit month dd is the two digit day hh is the hour (UTC) mm is the minute These represent the initial time of the model run. ff is the forecast hour (00 = initial analysis) prod represents the product name which can be: cbas = cloud base height ctpt = cloud top temperature qccc-500 = 500m cloud mixing ratio qccc-xsec = cloud mixing ratio cross-section stw10m = 10m Winds/Air Temperature/Sea Level Pressure wvap-xsec = water vapor mixing ratio cross-section zrh850 = 850mb winds/relative humidity/geopotential height zrh925 = 925mb winds/relative humidity/geopotential height 6.0 References None.
