DYCOMS-II Model:  COAMPS 18km Imagery Subset (GIF)


1.0  General Information


The COAMPS 18km Imagery (GIF) is one of several model products 
collected as part of the Dynamics and Chemistry of Marine 
Stratocumulus Phase II: Entrainment Studies (DYCOMS-II) project 
field catalog operated by the University Corporation for 
Atmospheric Research/Joint Office for Science Support (UCAR/JOSS; 
http://www.joss.ucar.edu/dycoms/catalog/).  The plots are from 
the Coupled Atmospheric Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS) model
which was run by the Naval Research Laboratory in a special mode
for DYCOMS-II.  Three nested grids were used: a 54km resolution
grid, an inner 18 km grid, and a small 6 km grid over the 
DYCOMS-II target area.  This data set contains a subset of the
imagery from the 18km grid.  Included are surface and 500 mb
imagery for the analysis time and forecast imagery every three 
hours to 24 hours.  The model was run at 00 and 12 UTC each day.
The products cover the period from 1 - 31 July 2001 (no imagery 
available 23 and 25 July) and cover the region from 29-34.5 N and 
116-127 W.  All images are in GIF format.

The following products are available on the 18km grid over the region
29-34.5 N and 116-127 W:  500mb Heights/Relative Vorticity/Winds and 
10m Winds/Air Temperature/Sea Level Pressure.


4.0  Quality Control Procedures


     UCAR/JOSS conducted no quality checks on these data.


5.0  File Naming Convention


The file names are structured as follows:

COAMPS_18km.yyyymmddhhmm.ff_prod.gif

Where COAMPS_18km is the data type
      yyyy is the four digit year
      mm is the two digit month
      dd is the two digit day
      hh is the hour (UTC)
      mm is the minute 
       These represent the initial time of the model run.
      ff is the forecast hour (00 = initial analysis)
      prod represents the product name which can be:
       stw10m = 10m Winds/Air Temperature/Sea Level Pressure
       gpz500 = 500mb heights/relative vorticity/winds
