GIDS-1 Station Information 1.0 General Description The GEWEX Continental-scale International Project (GCIP) Initial Dataset One (GIDS-1) contains data collected from over six thousand stations in the GIDS-1 area (i.e., approximately 85W to 106W longitude and 30N to 45N latitude) for the period 01 February 1992 through 30 April 1992. The station information dataset provided as part of GIDS-1 defines each station in the GIDS-1 data with station location, name, frequency of observation, etc. For a complete description of the station information file format, refer to section 2.0. 2.0 Detailed Format Description The following is a complete description of the station information file provided as part of GIDS-1. For each station, 17 parameters are listed. The beginning and ending dates for the period of coverage are either in UTC or local time depending on the particular dataset that contains the station's data. The majority of period of coverage dates are provided in UTC time, since all but the Soil Moisture and the TVA Dam Discharge datasets contain data reported at UTC times. The user should review a particular dataset's description document to determine how times are reported. Note that when a particular parameter is unknown for a station, either a blank or a question mark will appear in that parameter's position. For a complete list of Country, State, and County values, refer to the documents referenced in Section 6.0. Possible Platform types and frequency values are listed in separate tables following the parameter descriptions. Note that only those Platform types present in the GIDS-1 data have been listed. Parameters Units Identification Number ID number in data. (unitless) (`%-15s '). Latitude Station Latitude in decimal degrees ('%10.5f '). Longitude Station Longitude in decimal degrees ('%11.5f '). Occurrence Station occurrence ('%3d ') Lat/Lon Accuracy Number of digits accuracy in lat/lon values. ('%5d ') Name Expanded station name ('%-50s ') Begin Period of Coverage Beginning date of period of coverage. UTC or local depending on dataset. (YYYYMMDD) ('%-8s ') End Period of Coverage End date of period of coverage. UTC or local depending on dataset. (YYYYMMDD) ('%-8s ') Country Country in which station is located. Always US for GIDS-1. ('%-2s ') State State code. ('%-2s ') County County code. ('%-3s ') UTC offset Hour Offset from UTC time. ('%6.2f ') DST switch 'y' indicates station does switch to Daylight Savings Time. 'n' indicates station does not switch. ('%1c ') Platform type Collection Platform. ('%4d ') Frequency Frequency of data collection. ('%17s ') Elevation Station elevation (meters) ('%7.1 ') Fixed/Mobile flag Flag indicating if station has fixed location. 'f' indicates a fixed station. 'm' indicates a mobile station. The records should be 170 characters (plus newline). Additional characters on some lines consist of trailing blanks. All records may be safely truncated to 170 characters.
