This data set includes data from the SCAN stations in the SMEX02 region for the period from 1 June to 31 July 2002. The data are in columnar ASCII format. 2.0 INSTRUMENT DESCRIPTION Information in this readme is from the SCAN home page at the USDA/NRCS (http://www.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/scan/). 2.1 INSTRUMENTATION The standard SCAN site is configured as follows: Precipitation is measured using a storage type gage. Air Temperature is measured by a shielded thermister. Relative Humidity is measured by a thin film capacitance-type sensor. Wind Speed and Direction are measured by a propeller type anemometer. Solar Radiation is measured by a pyranometer. Barometric Pressure is measured by a silicon capacitive pressure sensor. Snow Water Content is measured using a snow pillow device and a pressure transducer. Snow Depth is measured by a sonic sensor. Soil Moisture is measured by a dielectric constant measuring device. The typical depths are 2, 4, 8, 20, and 40 inches. Soil Temperature is measured by an encapsulated thermistor. The typical depths are 2, 4, 8, 20, and 40 inches. 2.2 Station Locations Station location information is included within the data files. 3.0 DATA COLLECTION AND PROCESSING Information on the collection and processing of these data can be found at the SCAN Home Page: http://www.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/scan/ UCAR/JOSS conducted no processing or quality control on these data. 4.0 DATA FORMAT AND FILE NAMING 4.1 Data Format These data are in columnar ASCII format.
