00READ_ME version 1.0 - October 24, 1994. version 2.0 - January 31st, 1995. This is a description of the UCI processed NOAA P3's slow rate data. Access ------- The UCI WP3D data set for TOGA COARE can be accessed by either Mosaic or FTP. A. Via NCSA Mosaic ------------------ Access to the UCI Mosaic page is done using the URL: http://cafws4.eng.uci.edu NCSA Mosaic can be used to download the UCI processed data. It is also very convenient to use Mosaic to view and obtain PostScript graphs of the WP3D data. For each of the two planes, there are nine pages of graphs per flight, consisting of a 3-D flight track and eight pages of time series "strip-chart" graphs of important variables. Other information about the UCI data processing is also provided in the Mosaic pages. B. Via Anonymous FTP -------------------- ftp cafws4.eng.uci.edu (OR ftp 128.200.56.33) anonymous (Name) your E-mail address (Password) cd pub/TOGA_COARE/ There are three directories off of "TOGA_COARE/", they are: DATA_MATLAB/ (contains all processed data files in MATLAB binary format) Documents/ (contains documentation about the data) Plots_var/ (contains PostScript time series plots of selected variables described in paragraph above) File structure -------------- The files are stored in MATLAB binary format. The files range from 15 to 40 Mbytes in size and each file represents one flight. The files' names follow this labeling scheme: yymmdd(H or I)_P.mat as in "930209Is_P.mat", where yy, mm, and dd are the year, month and day on which the flight started. "H" refers to N42RF and "I" to N43RF, "_P" stands for "processed" and finally ".mat" is the extension required by MATLAB. For the slow-rate 1 Hz data, there are some 160 variables. A listing of these with definitions and units is available in the PostScript file "pub/TOGA_COARE/Documents/0togac_slow_var.ps" and also in the ASCII Latex text file "pub/TOGA_COARE/Documents/0togac_slow_var.tex". The variables are separated into 4 different types as indicated by the "a_", "c_", "s_" or "z_" prefix on the variable names. These types are: - ASCII (string) ----> "a_" - calibration coefficients ----> "c_" - slow variables (actual time series) ----> "s_" - miscellaneous (house-keeping) ----> "z_" Data ----- The INE ground speed components are adjusted to those indicated by GPS before they are used in the wind equations. Different correction schemes were tried and for more details refer to file "pub/TOGA_COARE/Documents/UCI_WP3D_memo.txt". The winds are corrected for humidity effects, (i.e., the aircraft true airspeed used in the wind equation is calculated using moist air properties). The aircraft vertical speed is obtained by integrating the INE vertical acceleration using the NCAR third-order baro-loop algorithm but without Coriolis force. The two fast response temperature sensors s_ttth1 and s_ttth2 (thermistors), are calibrated for each flight against one of the two slower sensors (Rosemount 102 deiced configuration "a", s_ttf1 or s_ttf2). Typically the time series used for the calibration start just before the descent into the IFA and end little after the ascent out of the IFA. In general s_ttf2 has been used as reference for N42RF (H) and s_ttf1 for N43RF (I). In the same manner, the fast response Lyman-Alpha AIR hygrometer is calibrated against the slower General Eastern dew-pointer (s_dpgef) for both absolute humidity and dew point (s_ah_laairf and s_dp_laairf). Empirical adjustments --------------------- Prior to the 1994 TOGA COARE International Data Workshop held in Toulouse, we made empirical adjustments to some of the aircraft measurements. The adjustment consisted of adding or subtracting a constant to/from the measurements. These offsets were determined from the many aircraft-to-aircraft intercomparisons in TOGA COARE with the goal of increasing the consistency between the various aircraft platforms. They are subject to further investigation and revision. The empirical offsets that have been used in the UCI data processing are summarized in the table below: --------------------------------------------------------------------- UCI Empirical Adjustments for TOGA COARE May 20, 1994 Formula: X_adj= X_orig + Empirical Adjustment Variable N42RF N43RF 308D C-130 -------- ----- ----- ---- ----- Total ttf2 ttf1 N.A. Registration of UCI Data Users ------------------------------ If you use the UCI-processed WP3D TOGA COARE data, we would appreciate it if you fill out the form below and send it electronically to us (dkhelif@uci.edu, sean@cafws3.eng.uci.edu). This will enable us to keep you informed about revisions and future updates. Also, it would be extremely helpful to us if you would inform us of any problems you encounter with these data. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name: Institution: E-mail address: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Contact ------- Please direct your inquiries and comments to: Carl Friehe cfriehe@uci.edu 714 824-6159 Djamal Khelif dkhelif@uci.edu 714 824-7437 Sean Burns sean@cafws3.eng.uci.edu 714 824-7437 FAX: 714 824-2249 address: University of California at Irvine Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Irvine, CA 92717-3975 USA
