Abstract:

The Local and Traditional Knowledge (LTK) component of the Bering Sea Integrated Ecological Research Project (BSIERP) is designed to provide data and perspective on the dynamics of the Bering Sea ecosystem by inviting residents of five Bering Sea Native Alaskan communities to share their life-long experience of the Bering Sea environment. Five such communities were selected to represent the range of Native Alaskan communities bordering the Bering Sea: Savoonga on St. Lawrence Island, St. Paul on the western edge of the continental shelf, Emmonak and Togiak of the Yukon-Kuskokwim delta shoreline, and Akutan in the eastern Aleutian Islands. This report is a draft summary of findings for Akutan.

Purpose:

To document local and traditional knowledge of the local Bering Sea ecosystem by residents of the Aleut community of Akutan, eastern Aleutian Islands, particularly with respect to local subsistence activities and local understandings of ecological relationships and temporal dynamics.

Data is from the personal observations, judgments, and opinions of knowledgeable local subsistence harvesters, notably fishermen. The scientific identities of local species described was verified as far as possible by reference to detailed behavioral, morphological, and ecological features; illustrations in field guides; and/or local vernacular and Aleut terms. Our interview questions directed conversations towards local understandings of interspecific trophic and other relationships, climate, tides, winds, and other environmental factors affecting abundance, distributional patterns, and sustainability of local harvests of species of special cultural interest and concern. Varied opinions were detailed with no attempt to impose a false consensus. The project was fully collaborative with a local Community Coordinator and Community Advisory Board.
