Description:
Abstract:
This data set was collected as part of the Chukchi Sea Environmental Studies Program (CSESP), a multi-year, interdisciplinary ecological study focused on areas in outer continental shelf oil and gas leases in the northeastern Chukchi Sea. In 2008 when the program began, two 30 x 30 nautical mile study area boxes were developed around areas of interest to ConocoPhillips and Shell. The ConocoPhillips study area (named Klondike), and the Shell study area (named Burger) became the focus of data collection. Data were collected from these two study areas again in 2009. Then, in 2010, Statoil joined the program, and a third study area, Statoil, was created and sampled as well as Klondike and Burger. In 2011, the scope of the study area was expanded to include the Hanna Shoal Regional Study Area.
The CSESP interdisciplinary studies include acoustic monitoring, baseline chemistry, benthic ecology, chemical oceanography, fisheries ecology, marine mammal ecology, physical oceanography, plankton ecology and nutrients, and seabird ecology.
This data set contains conductivity, temperature, depth (CTD) data collected with a Seabird, Inc. SBE-19+V2 instrument in the Chukchi Sea. CTD data parameters include the station where the data was collected; the cruise the data was collected on; the initials of the CTD operator; the make and model of the CTD instrument; the raw CTD *.hex file name; the dates and times in Greenwich Mean Time that the data was collected; the latitude and longitude of the location the data was collected at; the depth within the water column and the total water depth at which the data was collected; the water pressure, depth, temperature, salinity, conductivity, and chlorophyll fluorescence at the data collection location; the speed of sound in the water; the sigma T; beam attenuation; percent beam transmission; data quality flags as applicable; the name of the contractor who recorded and analyzed the data; the title of the annual report the data set supports; and as applicable, notes regarding a data record.
Purpose:
These data are part of a multi-year baseline environmental studies data set collected as part of the permitting process prior to drilling exploration wells. The objectives of the Chukchi Sea Environmental Baseline Studies Program are: 1. To provide data for pre-exploration and development-related activities 2. To provide data for permit applications 3. To provide input to planning of future operations and associated mitigation 4. To provide additional baseline data that can be used to assess and measure the potential environmental effects of offshore oil and gas exploration and development in the northeastern Chukchi Sea.

CSESP Attribute Accuracy Overview When the program began in 2008, scientists collected and stored their data through a variety of methods. Vessel data were collected by individual software packages and backed up as part of the regular computer backups, which may or may not have coincided with backups conducted by the scientists. Each scientist had his or her own method for recording and storing at sea observations and data; some of these methods included paper copies.
The TigerSoft application was developed in 2009 to better manage all scientific data collected through the CSESP. TigerSoft consists of three components: TigerObserver, TigerNav, and TigerObserver Server. Under the oversight of a data manager, these three programs worked in concert with predetermined scientific data protocols to integrate scientific observations with vessel navigation to produce standardized data sets. Data sets were backed up regularly and made available to scientists to proof and edit on a nightly basis during the cruises. TigerSoft was used each season for data collection since it's inception in 2009.
After the conclusion of each field season, data managers merged the TigerSoft daily observation databases of each discipline and distributed the data in Excel spreadsheet format to the primary investigators of each discipline. Primary investigators reviewed their data and signed forms acknowledging the completeness and accuracy of the data. If corrections needed to be made to the data, detailed information regarding the corrections and an edited copy of the data was returned to the data manager. Examples of corrections include updated species identification and deletion of an observation event that was made in error.
Each year the primary investigators spent approximately nine months analyzing their data and then produced a discipline specific annual report for CSESP and a final data set. The final data had to adhere to a predetermined data protocol and pass through a data validation tool in order to be accepted by the data manager. Data that did not pass validation were returned to the primary investigators to be corrected and resubmitted for validation.
In 2009 and 2010 CTD casts were recorded using the TigerSoft application. This data set has been deemed valid by the CSESP data validation tool.
CTD Attribute Accuracy Overview Specifications for the SBE19+ V2 Seacat Profiler used to gather CTD data: Measurement Range: Temperature (C): -5 to +35 Conductivity (S/m): 0 to 9 Pressure: 0 to full scale range (up to 7000 meters)
Initial Accuracy: Temperature (C): 0.005 Conductivity (S/m): 0.0005 Pressure: 0.1% of full scale range
Typical Stability: Temperature (C): 0.0002/month Conductivity (S/m): 0.0003/month Pressure: 0.1% of full scale range/year
Resolution: Temperature (C): 0.0001 Conductivity (S/m): 0.00005 (most oceanic water; resolves to 0.4 ppm in salinity) Pressure: 0.002% of full scale range

The Hemisphere VS100 Heading and Positioning Receiver was used to calculate CTD latitude and longitude; the horizontal accuracy of this instrument was +/-0.6m, and the heading accuracy was +/- 10 degrees at 2.0 m antenna separation.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
The data was processed using Seabird Seaterm software to ensure data quality. Data were processed according to the manufacturer's recommended procedures and further screened for anomalous spikes, dropouts and density inversions. Post-season calibrations of the temperature and conductivity cells were performed at the manufacturer's calibration facility and inspected for reasonable drift since the pre-season calibration. Typical drift of these sensors is less than or equal to 0.005 °C in temperature and 0.02 in salinity.
Completeness_Report:
CTD data was collected from July 25th until October 15th for the 2008 season, August 14th to October 10th for the 2009 season, and August 5th to October 6th for 2010 season. In 2008 and 2009, sampling was conducted in the Klondike and Burger study areas. In 2010 and 2011, sampling was conducted in both of these areas as well as the Statoil study area.

Process_Description:
Data Capture Procedures: SBE55 ECO Water Sample was connected to the SBE19+ V2 Seacat Profiler CTD via a 6 pin connector for communication. Seabird Seaterm software was used to configure the two instruments. The magnetic switch on the SBE19+ V2 Seacat Profiler CTD was turned on and the unit (SBE19+ V2 Seacat Profiler CTD and SBE55 ECO Water Sample) was soaked approximately 1 meter under the surface of the water for 1 minute before each deployment. Seabird Seaterm software was used to download both the SBE55 ECO Water Sample data and SBE19+ V2 Seacat Profiler CTD data after each deployment. The data was processed using Seabird Seaterm software to ensure data quality.

Process_Description:
Data were collected with a Seabird SBE-19+V2 CTD sampling at 4 Hz. The instrument was lowered through the water column at a rate of ~0.5m min-1 so that ~480 samples m-1 were obtained. Measured variables include pressure, temperature, conductivity, beam attenuation, beam transmission, and fluorescence. Derived variables include depth, salinity, density, and speed of sound. Data were processed according to the manufacturer's recommended procedures (provided in the SBE Data Processing manual) and further screened for anomalous spikes, dropouts, and density inversions. Data were averaged to 1 decibar (approximately 1 meter) vertical profiles. Post-season calibrations of the temperature and conductivity cells were performed at the manufacturer's calibration facility and inspected for reasonable drift since the pre-season calibration. Typical drift of these sensors is less than or equal to 0.005 °C in temperature and 0.02 in salinity.
