Abstract:

This data set contains vessel based marine mammal observations data collected in the Chukchi Sea in 1989 - 1990. Monitoring efforts were implemented in 1989 by Shell to determine effects of exploratory drilling operations on walrus and polar bears. Results were submitted to regulatory agencies in 1990.
Parameters of this data include latitude and longitude coordinates of marine mammal observer onboard a vessel when a mammal was sighted, the date and time of the sighting, the year of the sighting, the species sighted, the number of individuals sighted, and the contractor responsible for the study.

Purpose:

These data were collected by Shell in an effort to determine the effects of exploratory drilling operations on walrus and polar bears.

This metadata has not been reviewed by the contractor who collected the data. ConocoPhillips supplied this data for the NOAA data sharing effort. The data are owned by Shell.
