Description:
Abstract:
The 2010 Met Buoy Data, Klondike Study Area, NE Chukchi Sea dataset contains meteorological data collected for ConocoPhillips and Statoil on two buoys moored in the NE Chukchi Sea during the open water season, July to September 2010. The buoys were located within the Klondike study area, a 30 x 30 nautical mile region that is located in the Chukchi Sea outer continental shelf oil and gas lease area. Met buoy data parameters include wind direction, wind speed, maximum wind speed, air temperature, relative humidity, air pressure, water temperature, significant wave and maximum wave heights, wave period, current speed and direction, and the voltage of the battery used to operate the meteorological instrumentation on the buoy.
Purpose:
These data are part of a multi-year baseline environmental studies data set collected as part of the permitting process prior to drilling exploration wells.
Supplemental_Information:
This metadata file has not been reviewed by the contractor who created the data set. Buoy Description Built by Sunbacker Fiberglass in Monroe, Washington, Buoy 101 and 102 were identical with bodies approximately 9 feet in diameter and 42 inches in height. The buoys were fiberglass and filled with foam. The tower on which most of the instruments were mounted was constructed of aluminum and measured eight feet in height. Temperature, humidity, and barometer sensors were mounted just below the top rung of the tower. The wind instrument was mounted approximately 10 feet above the water surface. The bridle, on which the mooring system was attached, was stainless steel and extended about four feet below the buoy. An Aquadopp current meter and a Sea-Bird water temperature sensor were installed on the bridle about four feet below the top of the buoy. The wave sensor was located inside the hull. Solar cells and a wind generator were provided to keep the batteries charged. Instrumentation and Electronics The buoys were equipped with R.M. Young temperature, humidity, and pressure instruments. Temperature, humidity, and wind data were passed through an R.M. Young serial device that also contained an internal compass. An R.M. Young sonic wind device corrected for true north with the internal compass. Instrumentation included a TRIAXYS directional wave sensor, an Aquadopp current meter, and a Sea-Bird water temperature instrument. The buoy was also equipped with an Iridium Short Burst satellite modem and a GPS device. The controller module was a WinSystems single board computer that ran Windows XP. A power controller was used to interface the solar cells and wind generator with the batteries.

Each buoy, 101 and 102, contained a single board computer (SBC) controller from WinSystems, Inc. that ran the Windows XP operating system. The controller did not have a hard drive but used a removable flash disk. Two software programs were written in C++ by Fairweather Leasing, LLC to collect data; the data collection program and a program that allowed commands to be sent to the buoy via an email message. The meteorological data retrieved from the controller at the end of the season was in a text file format. Final data is stored in a *.csv format with a file size of approximately 1.3MB.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Attribute accuracy was tested by visually reviewing data retrieved from buoy 101 and 102. Each data element was visually scanned for missing observations or bad data. In addition, data were plotted in graphs to better determine if data values were outliers and or bad data. Data that did not appear to be accurate was flagged as "suspect". Suspect values were removed from the data set and replaced with a value of "-999". Where data values are missing, the fields are left blank. Missing values are due to problems with buoy instruments and the buoy battery as described below. Suspect, missing, or interpolated data have been flagged in the DATA_FLAG field, and fields with interpolated data have been identified in the DATA_FLAG_NOTE field. Met Buoy 101 Buoy Operation and Missing Data Met Buoy 101 was deployed on 7/24/2010 at approximately 04:00:00 Alaska Daylight Time (AKDT). The buoy operated continuously until 9/16/2010 00:15:00 AKDT when it stopped recording. It then resumed operation on 9/18/2010 at 15:15:00 AKDT and ran until 9/18/2010 19:45:00 AKDT when it stopped again and did not resume operating. It was later discovered that it stopped operating due to low battery voltage. When the buoy was recovered on 10/7/2010, the batteries were recharged, and the buoy resumed operating while on deck of the support vessel. Data Errors Interpolated Data There were a few instances when a data element was not recorded every 15 minutes. In those cases, the missing data were interpolated from adjacent cells. Interpolation was done by averaging values recorded before and after the missing data. Data rows that contain interpolated data have been flagged in the DATA_FLAG and DATA_FLAG_NOTE fields. Wind Data Two time errors occurred within the wind data. After Buoy 101 was deployed, it was discovered that the clock on the wind device was running approximately 0.8% slower than the clock on the controller on the buoy. Additionally, an error occurred when the controller was reading data from other sensors, which resulted in the per-second wind data being time stamped by the same time. A computer program was written to use the adjacent observations to fill in the missing wind data. Over the course of the deployment, there were six days where several hours of wind data were not recorded. The reason for this is unknown. Met Buoy 102 Buoy Operation and Missing Data Met buoy 102 was deployed on 7/28/2010 at approximately 15:15:00 AKDT . The buoy operated for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes before it shut down. Buoy 102 was started again on 7/30/2010 at approximately 22:30:00 AKDT and operated for 2 hours and 15 minutes before shutting down again early on 7/31/2010. Data collected during these two time periods of operation appear to be accurate. Buoy 102 was brought aboard the support vessel for repairs and then deployed again on 08/10/2010. Only wave, current, and water temperature observations resumed with this deployment; missing data were interpolated as possible. On 8/15/2010, data recordings from the current meter and water temperature stopped, and then started up again on 8/17/2010. Current measurements again stopped recording on 8/23/2010. On 8/24/2010, the wave meter shut down, and the buoy controller ceased to function shortly afterwards. During this period, only the water temperature was recorded. The reason for the shutdown was low battery voltage. The reason for the meteorological sensors failure to operate is unknown, but damage is suspected. Solar cells were damaged, presumably by wave action and the pressure sensor had been submerged; it had water in it and had to be replaced. The buoy was again brought on board the support vessel and the batteries recharged. Buoy 102 was redeployed on 9/5/2010 15:00:00 AKDT . Wind data collected at this time was suspect and replaced with "-999". On 9/26/2010 6:15:00 AKDT air temperature and humidity data stopped recording, followed on 9/27/2010 12:15:00 AKDT by wind and pressure data and on 9/30/2010 at 14:45:00 AKDT by wave data. Water temperature continued to be measured through the end of the month to 10/1/2010. After deployment on 9/5/2010 the current data were not recorded on the buoy controller but data were stored internally on the meter through 10/7/2010 10:43:00 AKDT . Data were imported into the current data set from the meter. Note: The currents were measured at 10 minute intervals and the recorded times were at 3, 13, 23, 33, 43, and 53 minutes past the hour. To match the times of the 15 minute observations, 3, 13, 33, and 43 were used for the 00, 15, 30, and 45 minute observation. Errors There are many missing observations of various elements. Where possible, the missing data was interpolated from adjacent cells. Wind measurements during the month of September 2010 are not considered reliable due to many instances of wind speed jumping to over 100 knots and many instances where the wind speed did not change for long periods. These data values were replaced with "-999" to indicate that they were unreliable.

Logical_Consistency_Report:
Data were visually scanned and then graphed to check for data quality. Wind measurements during the month of September 2010 were not considered reliable due to many instances of wind speed jumping to over 100 knots and many instances where the wind speed did not change for long periods that didn't correlate with other data. Another instance of suspect data includes anomalous water temperatures. These data values were replaced with "-999" to indicate that they were unreliable.
Completeness_Report:
Data that did not appear to be accurate were flagged as "suspect". Suspect values were removed from the dataset and replaced with a value of "-999". Where data values are missing, the fields were left blank. Suspect, missing, or interpolated data have been flagged in the DATA_FLAG field, and fields with interpolated data have been identified in the DATA_FLAG_NOTE field.
