Summer Surface Hydrographic Measurements in the Laptev Sea, 1980 to 2000

Summary

The data set consists of surface hydrographic data, including temperature and salinity, from the Laptev Sea. Data were collected during the summers of 1980 through 2000. The Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) in St. Petersburg collected the data through a Russian-German collaboration.

Researchers used different thermometers and salinometers during the study, with minimum accuracy within 0.05° C or 0.05 psu. Temperature and salinity were measured within the surface layer (<1 m depth).

Because of data-release restrictions in the Russian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and as specified in the original proposal, data have been interpolated to a regular grid. Data are in ASCII format, and are orderable online.

2. Detailed Data Description

Format

The salinity and temperature data are distributed ascompressed (zipped) files ("Salinity.zip" and "Temperature.zip"). When decompressed, the data are in comma-separated ASCII text (.csv) format.

File and Directory Structure

Each year, 1980 through 2000, has both a temperature file and a salinity file. The file "Hydrographicloc.txt" provides the year, month, and day that measurements were taken, and the longitude and latitude of the station location. The file "Hydrographicdata.txt" provides additional information about data collection methods and a list of references for further reading.

File Naming Convention

Data are compiled into one file for each year. Files beginning with "S" contain salinity; files beginning with "T" contain temperature. Example: T2000.csv contains temperature values for data collected during the summer of 2000.

File Size

Each zipped file is about 50 KB. Unzipped files for individual years range from 12 KB to 16 KB. Total data set size is approximately 476 KB.

4. Data Acquisition and Processing

Sensor or Instrument Description

Instruments varied on different expeditions (see Processing Steps):
Russian thermometer (type unspecified) with an accuracy of 0.05° C
Russian salinometer (model GM-65) with an accuracy of 0.05 (psu)
CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth) profiler, manufactured by ME-Electronics in Germany (model OTS-4) with an accuracy of 0.01° C and 0.01 (psu)

Processing Steps

For expeditions 1 through 9 (see Temporal Coverage) researchers measured the temperature with an unspecified thermometer (Russian make) with an accuracy of 0.05° C. They measured salinity using seawater conductivity measurements (values adjusted to the practical salinity scale) with a Russian salinometer, model GM-65 with an accuracy of 0.05 (psu).

For expedition 10, temperature and salinity measurements were carried out with a CTD of unspecified manufacture.

For expeditions 11 through 16, researchers measured temperature and salinity with a CTD manufactured by ME-Electronics (Germany), model OTS-4 with an accuracy of 0.01° C and 0.01 (psu). The manufacturer calibrated the CTD prior to and following the cruise.
