Abstract:
This data set represents the boundary of the Barrow Environmental Observatory (BEO) Science Research District (SRD) which emcompasses an area of approximately 7,644 acres.
Purpose:
This data set was compiled for the Barrow Arctic Science Consortium (BASC) which is responsible for managing the area for the Ukpeagvik Iñupiat Corporation (UIC - the Barrow Village Corporation) to promote research, long-term observations, community involvement, and environmental protection. The BEO was permanently set aside for research in 1992 by UIC.

Logical_Consistency_Report:
The BEO boundary revision is based on Differential GPS surveys of the shoreline of Elson Lagoon and the BEO corner points. This information was correlated with georeferenced IKONOS satellite imagery in ArcGIS to verify the locational information. GPS Processing: Horizontal and vertical errors were calculated for each GCP as the RMSE of base station and static point errors. The base station error was quantified using an Auto Gipsy solution (<http://www.unavco.ucar.edu/data_support/processing/gipsy/gipsy_info.html>). The base station errors are 0.6 cm (horizontal) and 2.5 cm (vertical). Static point errors were calculated using Trimble specifications (Trimble 4700 Operation Manual, version one, revision B, 1998: Sunnyvale, CA).

Differential GPS data was collected. The data was processed using Trimble Geomatics Office (TGO) version 1.5 and the precision of the survey points were obtained from the adjustment report created by the software. The worst horizontal positional accuracy was .5 cm for the corner points which were obtained via a static DPGS survey.

The coastline along Elson Lagoon was obtained via both Real Time Kinematic and Post-processed Kinematic surveys which introduced a 4 cm error in vertical precision.

DGPS points were surveyed by MSU staff (Craig Tweedie, Shawn P Serbin, David Zaks.) The BEO boundary was then generated in ArcGIS by incorporating DPGS corner points for the boundary and a DGPS derived vector for the shoreline along Elson Lagoon. Quality control check was performed by Allison Graves, Nuna Technologies. The following is a summary of the DGPS surveys: the first 8 corner points of the BEO were surveyed on June 23, of 2002. For each corner point, a standard static survey configuration was used, consisting of the BiPod, Rover Receiver, as well as the Zephyr antenna. The base of the BiPod positioned in the center of each survey cap, previously placed to mark the location. In the center of the survey caps there is a small indentation which was used to orient the base of the BiPod for the survey. The height of the antenna was obtained by first measuring the height of the survey cap above the ground, then measuring to the bottom of the antenna mount on the BiPod. To clarify, the height above the cap was found by measuring from the top of the cap to where the base of the antenna and the top of the pole meet. The positions were logged for at least 20 minutes, in order to allow enough time to obtain accurate coordinate information for the points. Corner points 9 and 10 were surveyed on July 8, 2002 in the same fashion as those above. Corner point location 11 was surveyed on August 15, 2002 while in route to another survey. The method used was exactly the same as the other corner points. Corners 13 and 14 were surveyed on August 16, 2002 also in the same manner as the other points. The shoreline boundary along Elson Lagoon was surveyed as a line by walking along the tundra edge.
