This data set represents the parcel lot boundaries and associated attributes for the Village of Barrow on the North Slope of Alaska.

Purpose:

This information was compiled for the North Slope Borough (NSB) Tax Maps. The attribute data was linked from the NSB Assessing office for use in the NSB's Permitting-Assessing Intranet Map Server.

This data set is being archived as part of the Barrow Area Spatial Data Infrastructure effort. This project is made possible with funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF Award OPP-0004401) and the US Geological Survey (USGS Award Number: 03HQAG0177) to the Barrow Arctic Science Consortium (BASC).

The attributes for this data set include the ESRI defaults, a unique ID and associated records from the NSB Assessing Dept. The attribute information received extensive review when printed out in the form of tax maps.

This information is not updated frequently. The related attribute information from the Tax Assessing office is based on the best available information in November, 2000. Major updates to this file are not expected.

Logical_Consistency_Report: This data set is topologically correct.

Completeness_Report:

Data set is considered complete as of November, 2000. Since the development boom of the 1990s subsided in Barrow, it is expected that minimal updates have been made to this data set. In August 2003, Allison Graves contacted Dave Logan to inquire about updates to the Barrow Parcel data. At that time, Dave mentioned that only 1 or 2 parcels in the Barrow (Browerville) area had been subdivided and that no other updates had been made to the tax maps since 2000.

Parcel data is based on surveys that have been entered into ArcInfo using Coordinate Geometry. Known errors exist due to the movement of benchmarks due to frost heave.

This effort to document and archive Barrow Area data has been led by BASC through contracts with MSU and Nuna Technologies.

Process_Step:

Process_Description:

Locational information was compiled from compiled with traditional survey methods. This information was drafted and printed out in the form of survey plats. The survey plats were reviewed and approved by the North Slope Borough Department of Planning and Community Services. Paper plots were provided to the NSB GIS for incorporation into the village parcel database. Each parcel received a unique identifier. This ID was used to link the parcel graphics to the attribute database obtain from the NSB Assessing Office. Parcel linework was compiled by Dave Logan and the attribute information was "joined" to this file by Allison Graves (former NSB GIS System Analyst.)
