Section 4: Land Based Radar Data The Data Center has obtained radar data from several different sources: 15 NWS sites, the Geophysics Lab (AFSC) at Hanscom AFB, and the Halifax and Holyrood radars. Airborne radar data from the WP-3Ds are covered in section 2 (see sections 2.1.3 and 2.1.4) Radar data from several other Canadian stations can be obtained from the AES, contact Dr. Norman Donaldson for more information. 4.1 Canadian Radar Data 4.1.1 Halifax and Holyrood Digital Radar Data Form: digital Size: Volume: 5 tapes from each site This digital radar data contains 10-minute volume-scans of 5 cm data to about 200 km from Halifax and Holyrood (near St. John's, Newfoundland). The Holyrood radar is a Raytheon C-band radar and is part of the AES national network. The radars were located at: Halifax, NS (YHZ) 44.87N 63.50W Holyrood, NF 47.70N 53.20W A sample program to read these data was provided by Norman Donaldson of AES. Printed CAPPIs of these data are also available (see section 4.1.2 below). 4.1.2 Halifax and Holyrood Radar CAPPIs Form: paper. Size: 8.5"x11" Volume: 175 pages total 1.5 km radar CAPPIs (Constant Altitude Plan Position Indicators) are provided for every hour during IOPs. The CAPPIs are black and white, with six CAPPIs on one 8 x 11 page. There are 68 pages for Holyrood and 107 pages for Halifax. These data were derived from the digital data described above (see section 4.1.1). 4.2 U.S. Radar Data 4.2.1 NWS Radar Scope Photographs on Microfilm. Form: microfilm, paper Size: 8.5S x 11S (paper) Volume: 117 rolls of microfilm The EDC has obtained copies of the scope films for the 15 NWS radar sites listed below for the ERICA period. Copies of these films can be obtained from NCDC. The Data Center will loan the films to interested researchers, or generate select hardcopy on request. These charts show an hourly radar summary for the entire U.S. Each of three microfilms contains one month of charts, with one chart per hour. Selected hardcopy can be generated at the EDC. 4.2.4 Hanscom AFB Color Scope Photographs Form: photographic prints Size: 8.5S x 11S Volume: 55 photos total These photos show the AFGL low-level reflectivity displays (PPIs) at approximately hourly intervals. There are 21 photos for IOP 3 (18-19 Jan.) and 34 photos for IOP 8 (23-25 Feb.) They were provided to the EDC by James Metcalf of the Geophysics Laboratory (AFSC) at Hanscom AFB in Mass. The radar is located at 42.41N, 71.49W. The photos are available as a loan from the Data Center. Researchers interested in obtaining digital data from the AFGL radar site should contact Dr. James Metcalf.
