Title: Northern Fur Seal foraging, 2008, Patch Dynamics (B67)
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: tabular digital data
Description:
Abstract:
This data set contains Telemetry data for northern fur seals in the summer of 2008. We tagged lactating females with Multi-Channel Accelerometer Biologer (MCAB) tags and Fastloc GPS tags made by Sirtrack. The MCAB tags recoreded Date, Time, Acceleration in 3 Dimensions, Depth (Pressure 1), Speed (Infra red reflectance), Earths Magnetic Field in 3 Dimensions, Temperature (internal), Temperature (external) Light, Pitch (deg) and Roll (deg). The GPS tags recorded position in Lat and Long and Date and Time among other things. 26 females were successfully tagged with GPS tags. This data locations cover much of the South Eastern Bering sea surronding the Pribilof Islands out to a radius of up to 400 km away from St. Paul Island. 6 females returned with MCAB data
Purpose:
The large breeding concentrations of sea birds and marine mammals at Bogoslof Island and the Pribilof Islands are undergoing divergent population trajectories. Those on Bogoslof Island have been healthier than those at the Pribilof Islands. Our study is focused on determining why populations of seabirds and fur seals are declining on the Pribilofs and increasing at Bogoslof. We will test the hypothesis that climate-induced changes in the physical environment control forage patch dynamics and alter food availability, which in turn determines opposite trends in productivity and population dynamics of piscivorous top-predators between the oceanic and the continental shelf domains in the south-eastern Bering Sea. We will undertake our fine-scale predator-prey study at Bogoslof Island and surrounding waters (in 2009) on seabirds (thick-billed murres and black-legged kittiwakes), marine mammals (northern fur seals), and forage fishes to examine controlling mechanisms that determine whether populations of top-predators grow or decline. Data from Bogoslof Island will be combined and contrasted with the Patch Dynamic Study at the Pribilof Islands (2008 and 2009) to predict how species in different domains of the Bering Sea ecosystem will respond to climate change. Seabirds (thick-billed murres and black-legged kittiwakes) and marine mammals (northern fur seals) will be tracked in the Southern Bering Sea to determine where, when, and how they capture prey. Forage species will be sampled from vessels using nets and hydro-acoustics to describe the patches (quality and quantity) and their relationship with physical oceanography. Relative densities of prey patches and foraging success of birds and mammals will be related to regional and interannual differences in population processes to determine (i) how changes in patch dynamics influence diets (species composition and energy content), and (ii) how diets affect the nutritional status of individuals, which in turn determines population dynamics (reproductive success and population trends). Bogoslof Island lies north of the Aleutian Arc adjacent to Aleutian Passes and is surrounded by deep oceanic water, whereas the Pribilof Islands are on the continental shelf and are surrounded by shallow water with the shelf break within seabird foraging distance. The marked differences between these two Bering Sea domains in geography, oceanography and species dominance Bogoslof Patch Dynamics Study – Revised Research Plan February 15, 2008 1) provide a stark contrast that will advance the predictive powers of the functional relationships that will be derived and used in mathematical models to forecast how the Bering Sea and its biomass will respond to climate change. A comparison of Bogoslof Island and the Pribilof Islands presents a unique and timely natural experiment with an extraordinary opportunity to learn about the Bering Sea ecosystem. Conducting studies at the two sites is a powerful method to determine 1) the factors behind opposing population trends of apex predators; 2) the controlling mechanisms that link climate and predator-prey interactions, and 3) how species in the Bering Sea will respond to climate change (by providing BSIERP models with functional predator-prey relationships derived from our field studies).
