Abstract:
This data set was collected as part of the Joint Monitoring Program during seismic activities in the Chukchi Sea in summer and fall of 2006. The objective of the aerial surveys was to update data on distribution and relative abundance of marine mammals in coastal areas of the eastern Chukchi Sea during the open-water season. Aerial surveys were conducted from Barrow to Point Hope in two ways: a sawtooth flight pattern and a coastline flight pattern. The sawtooth survey was broad-scale, reaching approximately 20 nm offshore. The coastal survey hugged the coastline, focusing on nearshore areas and lagoons.
This data set contains the flight tracks and marine mammal observing conditions. The parameters of this data set include an internal table reference for LGL; the date of recording; transect identification; the time a transect started and ended; the altitude of the aircraft; the air temperature; wind speed; cloud cover; initials of observers; ice coverage, sea state, visibility, and glare from left and right sides of aircraft. The related data set entitled Aerial Marine Mammal Observations in the Chukchi Sea, 2006 contains marine mammal observation data.
Purpose:
Aerial surveys were conducted in 2006 to monitor marine mammal abundance, distribution, and behavior and determine the potential effects of offshore seismic exploration activities on marine mammals.

Added a unique id for the transect (TSX_ID), the coordinates in NAD83 of the new points (TSX_PT_LAT_DD83 and TSX_PT_LON_DD83), and the order of the points that make up each unique transect (TSX_PT_ORDER). The CSV does not contain an OBJECT_ID , SHAPE, or a Shape_length field.
