HS3: Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel
Summary
The Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel (HS3) project is a multi-year investigation aimed at examining hurricane formation and intensity change. In 2011 there were two research flights of the unmanned NOAA/NASA Global Hawk (GH) aircraft on 9 and 14 September, during which 79 dropsonde profiles were collected. In 2012 there were six research flights of the GH aircraft conducted between 7 September and 26 September, during which 337 dropsonde profiles were collected. In 2013 there were seven research flights of the GH aircraft conducted between 20 August and 19 September, during which 433 dropsonde profiles were collected. In 2014 there were eleven research flights of the GH aircraft conducted between 26 August and 30 September, during which 656 dropsonde profiles were collected.
