MAC-94: Marine Atmospheric Chemistry

Summary

A single SSSF Cross-Chain LORAN Atmospheric Sounding System (CLASS) station was deployed on Christmas Island in summer 1994. The CLASS was used to support an experiment designed to better understand sulfite processes occurring in the ocean-atmosphere environment. The PI (Alan Bandy, Drexel University) was primarily interested in boundary layer data, and so a special ballast device was used to maintain low ascent rates (1-3 m/s) through the boundary layer and normal ascent rates (~5 m/s) after a set period of time. The system performed well and achieved the desired results.
