MITTS: Monitoring the Intensification and Track of Tropical Storms (MITTS)

Summary

The purpose of the MITTS (Monitoring the Intensification and Track of Tropical Storms) project was to support NOAA operational hurricane tracking and observations while the G-IV was undergoing repairs.  The NSF/NCAR GV was outfitted with AVAPS to take observations of developing and mature tropical systems in the tropics.  The GV deployed to Hawaii and flew missions at the request of NOAA, returning to Broomfield in between IOPs.  Data collected supported operational forecasters and models to help provide better forecasts of tropical storm strength and track.
