SOS93: Swiss Oxidant Study

Summary

This cost-recovery program utilized the King Air to study production of ozone in Switzerland as part of a five-year Swiss program, which seeks to develop ozone dispersion models that can be used for pollution reduction strategies. The King Air measurements characterized the horizontal and vertical distribution of nitrogen oxides, non-methane hydrocarbons, formaldehyde, hydro- gen peroxide, organic hydroperoxides, and other species over the Swiss Plateau to examine reaction intermediates of ozone production. The measurements documented the buildup of photochemical smog in the region south of the Alps, including high concentrations of nitrogen oxides and ozone concentrations in excess of 100 ppbv. The ATD team overcame a series of small problems with the King Air data system to obtain an excellent data set for this program. The co-PIs were Gregory Kok (ATD) and Albrecht Neftel (University of Bern).
