Abstract:
The 2011 Met Buoy Data, Hanna Shoal and Klondike Study Area, Chukchi Sea dataset contains meteorological data collected for ConocoPhillips, Shell, and Statoil on two buoys moored in the northeast Chukchi Sea during the open water season of 2011. Buoy MOB1 was located over Hanna Shoal, while Buoy MOB2 was located within the Klondike study area. The Klondike study area is a 30 x 30 nautical mile region located on the Chukchi outer continental shelf. Met buoy data parameters include buoy deployment coordinates, wind direction, wind speed, maximum wind speed, air temperature, relative humidity, air pressure, water temperature, significant wave and maximum wave heights, wave period, wave direction, current speed and direction, and the voltage of the battery used to operate the meteorological instrumentation on the buoy.
Purpose:
These data are part of a multi-year baseline environmental studies dataset collected as part of the permitting process prior to drilling exploration wells.
Supplemental_Information:
This metadata file has not been reviewed by the contractor who created the data set. Buoy Description Buoy MOB1 and MOB2 were Deep Ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis (DART) buoys. The DART buoy body is approximately 118 inches in diameter, 42 inches high and was built by Sunbacker Fiberglass in Monroe, Washington. The buoy is fiberglass and is filled with foam. The tower on which most of the instruments are mounted is 8 feet high. The bridle, on which the mooring system is attached, is stainless steel and extends about 4 feet below the buoy. The buoy weighs approximately 2,390 pounds when fully loaded with sensors and batteries. Its gross displacement is 7,700 pounds. There were eight 400 amp hour batteries on MOB1 and MOB2. The batteries weighed 125 pounds each and provided power to the instruments and satellite modem. The batteries were charged with an onboard system of solar cells. The navigation light on the buoy was run off a separate battery that was also solar-powered. Instrumentation and Electronics The DART buoys were equipped with R.M. Young temperature, humidity, and pressure instruments. The temperature and humidity instruments were mounted nine feet above the water, while the pressure sensor was mounted eight feet above the water. Wind data was captured by an R.M. Young Alpine wind monitor that was mounted 10 feet above the water surface. Temperature, humidity, and wind data were passed through an R.M. Young serial device, which also contained an internal compass that converted the wind to true north. A TRIAXYS directional wave sensor collected wave data. An Aquadopp current meter was mounted on the buoy 5.4 feet below the water level, while a Sea-Bird water temperature instrument was mounted five feet below the water level. The buoy was also equipped with an Iridium Short Burst satellite modem and GPS device that was scheduled to report positional information every six hours. Eight 400 amp hour batteries (weighing 125 pounds each) powered the instruments and satellite modem. Batteries were charged with an onboard system of solar cells.

MOB1 and MOB2 software was run on a Windows XP operating system. The system ran three programs: data collection software written in C++ by Fairweather Leasing, LLC, control software that monitored data collection for quality assurance, and software to test all data collection ports. In addition, Aquadopp software was installed to program the Aquadopp current meter. Data were collected and stored on system disks during the period of deployment. Data were converted to .csv file format.

Attribute accuracy was tested by visually reviewing data retrieved from buoys MOB1 and MOB2. Data were quality controlled by graphing each parameter and examining the results for reasonableness. Missing or interpolated data have been flagged in the DATA_FLAG field, and fields with interpolated data have been identified in the DATA_FLAG_NOTE field. Missing data have been replaced with "999" for all fields except APRES_MB, in which missing data were replaced with a "9999" value. All short-term missing observations (less than one hour) were interpolated from adjacent cells. Interpolated Data MOB1 had eight missing observations in August and one in October. The missing August data were due for the most part to replacing instruments that had failed. MOB2 had three missing observations in September and one in October. Missing Data All missing data were recorded as "999" except for air pressure data which were recorded as "9999". The wave meter failed on MOB1 prior to deployment, so wave data were not recorded on the buoy. The pressure data are missing on MOB1 from 8/27/11 12:30:00 until 8/29/11 11:45:00 due to a wire being broken during replacement of the wind sensor. The MOB1 anemometer was damaged during a storm en route to the deployment site and the wind direction was off by about 180 degrees from the time of deployment until 8/27/11 14:15:00 when the unit was replaced. All MOB1 data did not change from 9/7/11 00:30 until 9/14/11 13:45:00. The program was restarted to correct the problem. These data are marked as missing. The reason for the failure is being investigated. Quality Control On MOB1 on 9/16/2011 14:45:00, there was an anomalous temperature of -3.2 degrees bracketed by temperatures of plus 2 degrees. There were occasional missing maximum winds in MOB1 and MOB2; this was caused by an error in the programming. Every fourth voltage was missing on MOB2; however, because voltage data are not meteorological, no changes were made.
