HIPPO-2 Airborne Oxygen Instrument (AO2)

Project:

Summary

The NCAR Airborne Oxygen Instrument (AO2) was mounted on the NCAR GV during the HIPPO-2 project. The submitted AO2 data are in 1 flat ascii text file per flight. Each file contains running 10-second medians (of the original ~ 2.5-second data) at 1 Hz matching the times in the RAF data files. The files are in NASA Ames 1001 format, with a final comment line of variable names (UT CO2_AO2orig O2_AO2orig APO_AO2orig CO2_AO2 O2_AO2 APO_AO2), spaces separating columns, and 9999.99 for missing data. The reported times correspond to when the air entered the inlet. This instrument measures O2/N2 ratio as well as CO2 concentration.

Versions
  • 1.0 (2013-05-17)
  • 2.0 (2021-01-29):

The AO2 and Medusa data sets have been updated to coincide with the publication of Stephens et al., Atmospheric Measurement Techniques, 2021. For Medusa O2 data, this has included some additional flask screening and updates to the Ar/N2 correction. For AO2 O2 data, this has included more extensive QAQC and filtering updates, revisions to the time-or-flight and mean offset corrections, and implementation of an empirical ascent/descent correction, as described in the paper. For both AO2 and Medusa, the O2 data have been updated for a span correction to the SIO O2 Scale.

(Only the current version of the data is available to order. If you have questions about a prior version, please email us.)
