USAF C-130 Flight Level 1-second Resolution Data

Project:

Summary

This data set includes 1-second resolution flight level data from the WC-130 flights for the ITOP field program (15 August - 20 October 2010). Additional information is available in the readme files. This data set was provided by the Naval Research Laboratory and the data are in a columnar ASCII format. This data set also includes 1 second resolution data from the Stepped Frequency Microwave Radiometer (SFMR) that was processed using the Klotz and Uhlhorn (2014) algorithm. These data are in NetCDF format.

Versions
  • 1.0 (2012-02-03)
  • 2.0 (2017-10-19):

This version includes SFMR data reprocessed using the new operational algorithm that is based on Klotz and Uhlhorn (2014). The updated algorithm improves the separation of the wind and rain in the microwave signal in order to reduce a high wind speed bias at wind speeds below about 60 kt. In so doing, rain rates are also more representative within the instrument limitations. A low bias in the strong wind speeds (over 120 kt) is reduced as well.

(Only the current version of the data is available to order. If you have questions about a prior version, please email us.)
