RAINEX: Hurricane Rainband and Intensity Change Experiment

Summary

One of the primary outstanding problems in hurricane dynamics is the tendency of mature storms to undergo rapid intensity changes. These intensity changes appear to be related to dynamical interactions between the inner-core region of the storm (eyewall) and rainbands located outside the eyewall region. The NSF sponsored Hurricane Rainband and Intensity Experiment (RAINEX) is an aircraft investigation of hurricane intensity changes associated with eyewall-rainband interactions. The objective of RAINEX is to understand hurricane intensity changes. Observational data obtained from research aircraft such as Doppler radar and dropsonde kinematics and thermodynamics as well as supporting operational datasets such as NEXRAD will be compared to model output from a University of Miami version of MM5 as well as the WRF model. These comparisons will be used to determine the accuracy of the research model forecasts and will help extend the diagnosis of the observational data.
